Behavior Assistant

Title: Behavior Assistant Reports to: Emotional Disabilities Coordinator, Behavior Specialist FTE: 1.0/185 days Rate: $20/hour Hours: 7.5 hours with a 30 minute duty free lunch Position/Role Summary: This position supports the direct implementation of behavioral supports to students in the Emotional Disabilities program. The Behavior Support Assistant will be responsible for implementing systematic behavior plans and strategies within LADSE classrooms and assisting in the de-escalation of students struggling with coping skills. Qualifications: Highly Qualified Paraprofessional Certification from the Illinois State Board of Education Coursework in psychology, human development, child development, classroom management, and/or human behavior preferred Evaluation/Evaluator: Emotional Disabilities Coordinator and Behavior Specialist Primary Responsibilities: Makes decisions and demonstrates leadership that supports the mission, vision, goals, and interests of LADSE and the program. Communicates, collaborates, and cooperates with colleagues, supervisors, staff, students, and families. Monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g., restrooms, playground, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, gym) for the purpose of maintaining a safe and positive learning environment. Implements the classroom behavior management program as well as individual student’s behavior plans. Assists students during crisis situations utilizing appropriate Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) techniques. Provides direct service in both a classroom therapy setting (1:1 instruction) and the natural environment (general education classroom). Maintains and acquires technical knowledge in required training. Actively participates in student and team meetings as appropriate. Assists in collecting data to monitor and revise student behavior intervention plans. The Behavior Support Assistant may move to various classrooms throughout the school year to support the greatest identified need. Supports students in the school setting (e.g., during transitions between classes, beginning and end of the day, at recess, lunch, and specials) with optimizing social interactions and social pragmatic instruction in real life situations using principles of ABA and evidence‑based behavioral strategies. Communicates learning and behavioral difficulties encountered by students to the teacher. Serves as a source of information and support to any substitute teacher assigned in the absence of the teacher or paraprofessional. Assists the Behavior Specialist in reporting and clerical duties as needed. Participates in staff meetings (as appropriate) and in‑service training programs. Works with the Program Coordinator, Assistant Program Coordinator, teachers and other building staff to foster a positive and efficient school atmosphere. Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students. Lifts and transports students, as needed. No weight restrictions. Assists with toileting needs of students, if appropriate. Observes and follows all LADSE policies and procedures. Performs other duties as assigned.
