Transportation Operations Technician I

Overview The Agency of Transportation is seeking a Transportation Operations Technician I. This position is responsible for various tasks related to highway maintenance, such as repairing guardrails, cutting trees and brush, patching roads, picking litter, ditching, and more. In the winter months the position also assists with plowing and salting. Overtime may be required. Transportation Operations Technician I: 54818 Transportation Operations Technician II: 54817 Sign‑On & Retention Bonus The position is eligible for a sign‑on and retention bonus of up to $2,000. Newly hired CDL and non‑CDL holders who are hired into a permanent maintenance worker or mechanic job on or after July 13, 2025 are eligible. Compensation As of July 12, 2026, the step 1 rate for pay grade 18 will be $21.41 per hour and the step 15 rate will be $33.11 per hour. Environmental Factors Duties require working in extreme outdoor weather conditions. All employees may be required to report to work outside of their area or work schedule and must be reachable by phone. Dangers are present when work is performed near heavy equipment, hazardous materials, and roadside litter. Employees may be exposed to blood and airborne pathogens. Hazards are always present when working on roads as traffic passes or during emergencies such as floods, ice, and snow. An incumbent must be able to use tools and equipment commonly used for maintenance work, lift materials, and participate in a random drug and alcohol‑testing program prior to operating vehicles or equipment. Considerable overtime work is required, particularly during the winter months, and is considered a condition of employment. Minimum Qualifications No education or experience required. Applicants must be at least 18 years old. Preferred Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent. Special Requirements A valid driver's license is required. An incumbent must live within reasonable proximity of the assigned workstation. Possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required for successful completion of the original probation. An incumbent must complete all VTTC required coursework within six (6) months or be enrolled.
