Description

Fleet Management is a division within the Department of General Services and is responsible for the acquisition, disposal, maintenance, and servicing of over 2,000 city vehicles and equipment. The Fleet Management Division (FMD) also manages various fleet programs such as fuel management, motor-pool services, and contract administration. The city currently averages 1,466 active rolling stock units and 560 active equipment units. These units are utilized to provide a variety of services to city residents ranging from public safety to utility and refuse needs. The ability of city departments to provide services effectively and efficiently is often dependent on a safe and reliable fleet of vehicles and equipment.

The Department of General Services, Fleet Management Division, is seeking an Automotive Service Attendant to assist in evaluating the service needs of City of Norfolk vehicles and equipment by generating work orders and coordinating with Automotive Service Technicians to ensure effective communication between customers and repair teams. Performs administrative and financial tasks, as well as providing support to the service teams as required. Additionally, will perform basic care and preventative maintenance of City vehicles to include changing oil, checking fluid levels and rotating tires.

Essential Functions

Essential functions include but are not limited to:

• Point of contact for all City of Norfolk customers and vendors for vehicle service and repair needs.

• Monitors and tracks vehicle service and repair needs, to ensure City vehicles are kept in operational working order.

• Answer phone calls and emails from customers and vendors.

• Process service requests and deliver vehicles to assigned shops or vendors.

• Create and process purchase orders and payments for vendor repairs.

• Demonstrate strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and commitment to ensuring the efficient operation of the service department.

• Assists automotive repair technicians in performing preventative maintenance and general repairs to vehicles and equipment.

• Preventative maintenance duties include, but are not limited to, servicing and repairing head, tail, and interior lights; replacing and repairing windshield wipers; performing oil changes; replacing engine filters; maintaining coolant systems; mounting and balancing tires; servicing and replacing vehicle batteries; and performing vehicle chassis maintenance.

• Knowledge of automotive maintenance and repair.

• Performs other duties such as cleaning and maintaining interior and exterior of the shop.

• Ability to use basic computer software, such as Microsoft Windows, and Fleet Management software.

• Ability to work in dirty or hazardous areas.

Education/Experience

Work requires the ability to read and understand written instructions, to understand simple processes and the routine operation of machines. Level of knowledge equivalent to less than high school or equivalency.

Required:

• One year in Automotive service.

• Valid driver's license required.

Work Schedule:

• Monday-Friday, 8 hours/day, 6:30am-3:00pm, 40 hours/week

• This is an essential position and will be required to report to work during inclement weather and City emergencies.

• Retirement

If you are hired October 5, 2010, or after to a position with City of Norfolk Retirement System benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

If you are hired January 1, 2022, or after to a position with Virginia Retirement System (VRS) benefits, you will be required to contribute five percent (5%) of your salary toward your retirement benefit. This will be a pre-tax payroll deduction.

• The Tuition Assistance Program is established to encourage employees toward continued self-development and education. Permanent full-time and permanent part-time classified, unclassified permanent, full-time special projects, and constitutional employees who have completed six months continuous service will be eligible to apply. The applicant’s school of enrollment must be an accredited institution.
