Academic Support Specialist

Position SummaryThe Academic Support Specialist supports the effective operation and delivery of services within the Academic Support Center, with primary responsibility for coordinating tutoring and accommodated testing services. The position collaborates with students, faculty, and campus partners to provide academic support programs and services that promote student success, retention, and academic achievement.This is a fully on-campus role, where we do our work in community with colleagues, students, and campus partners.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesThe essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:Collaborate with faculty and students to determine tutoring needs and coordinate tutoring services, including in-person, online, walk-in tutoring, and athletic study table offerings.Coordinate and oversee the Personal Tutor Program, including identifying student needs, matching students with appropriate tutors, communicating with faculty and students, monitoring participation, and evaluating program effectiveness.Collect, analyze, and utilize tutoring and academic support data to evaluate program effectiveness, identify student and course needs, inform scheduling and resource allocation, and support assessment and continuous improvement.Recruit, train, and supervise tutors and work study students for the Academic Support Center.Maintain personnel files and provide employee references for tutoring and work study staff.Develop tutor training modules to prepare tutors to meet the needs of a diverse student body.Develop and advertise the tutoring schedule and other academic support offerings. Serve as administrator of WCOnline, the tutor scheduling software.Represent the Academic Support Center at summer orientation and other campus events, as needed.Coordinate and support the Graduate Writing Coach program, including communication with graduate programs and monitoring student utilization and needs.Provide academic coaching, mentoring, and targeted outreach to students who may be experiencing academic difficulty or are at risk of attrition, in collaboration with the Director and appropriate campus partners.Collaborate with the Director of Academic Support Services and other members of the campus community to develop and provide academic support programs/initiatives that aid in student success and retention.Monitor tutoring budget and make recommendations to reduce costs when appropriate, based on tutoring activity.Coordinate and administer testing accommodations for students registered with Accessibility Services, including scheduling accommodated examinations, coordinating readers/scribes and other testing supports, communicating with students and faculty, maintaining testing procedures, monitoring academic integrity, and ensuring timely return of completed examinations.Work closely with students and faculty to agree upon appropriate times for exams and send notifications/reminders to students and faculty as needed.Plan testing room assignments and maintain a quiet, comfortable, and clean testing environment.Support First Gen Cavs and other student-success initiatives as assigned, including outreach, mentoring, programming, and coordination with campus partners.Support the Director of Academic Support Services with various duties as needed to assist in the functioning of the Academic Support Center and various efforts to support/retain students.This job description in no way states or implies that these are the only duties to be performed by the employee(s) of this position. Must also possess the following:Education:Bachelor’s Degree Required. Master’s Degree preferred.Work Experience:Minimum of 1-3 years working in a higher education setting. Experience coordinating academic support, tutoring, testing, or student success programs preferred. Experience working with a diverse student population and knowledge of disability-related legislation and/or the implementation of disability-related accommodations preferred.Skills and abilities:Professional demeanor and ability to interact with charity towards students, staff and faculty. Positive attitude a must.Must be detail-oriented, organized, and able to effectively manage multiple priorities. Strong critical thinking, written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills required.Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment.Ability to work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and administrators.Experience using student information systems and Microsoft Office applications.Ability to attend night or weekend events as needed for various on-campus eventsPhysical Demands and Work EnvironmentThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
