LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE

Job Title

This is the third of six levels in the Health Services series.

Job Description

Incumbents coordinate and administer health services for assigned populations. Responsibilities may include administering medications, first aid, medical tests and vaccines; scheduling medical tests and procedures; maintaining records and reports; teaching First Aid and CPR; planning, coordinating and implementing health clinics; educating clients, the public, and staff on health-related topics; ordering supplies; completing reports; and ensuring compliance with applicable standards, rules, and regulations. Incumbents may supervise staff.

Psych LPN

• All Core class duties listed previously, plus
• Provides specific psychiatric screening and assessments using established tools. Coordinates psychiatric scheduling with Advance Practitioner clinics.
• Provide direct coordination of Advance Practice clinics for medical patients specifically related to presenting cases for clinic cases.
• Provide ongoing tracking of treatments and tests for complex medical and psychiatric patients.
• Provide assistance to current staff for emergencies, staffing needs, medication passes, and other duties as assigned.

Float LPN

• All Core class duties listed previously, plus
• Provides care in multiple care areas including juvenile and adult inmates and employee clinic patients.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This position does not require supervisory responsibilities of lower-level employees. However, this position may assist Director of Nursing, Nurse Practitioner, and Medical Director in assisting with coordination of the following: prioritizing and assigning work; conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff are trained; ensuring that employees follow policies and procedures; maintaining a healthy and safe working environment; and making hiring, termination, and disciplinary recommendations.

Requirements

Education and Experience: High School Diploma or equivalent (GED), completion of Licensed Practical Nurse training and two years' experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.

Licensing Requirements: Licensed Practical Nurse. Preferred Phlebotomy and IV Certification. Valid Driver's License as per State law or requirement.

Performing blood draws including starting IVs and administering IV fluids under the supervision of the Director of Nursing, Nurse Practitioner, or Medical Doctor. Dispensing medications under supervision of the Director of Nursing, Nurse Practitioner, or Medical Director. Giving injections. Administering first aid. Maintaining confidentiality. Preparing medical case files and histories. Maintaining inventory. Facilitating training sessions and actively participating in continuing education. Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work direction.

Supplemental Information

Physical Requirements: Positions in this class typically require reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions. Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work. Incumbents may be subjected to blood and other bodily fluids.

Work Environment: While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be regularly exposed to incarcerated adults residing or being detained at the center who may, at times, become volatile or even physically aggressive. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to the risk of electrical shock. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; outside weather conditions; and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
