Job Description Summary This is an entry-level position within the Engineering Technologist staff. The purpose of this role is to apply technical skills to accurately evaluate options and design safe, cost-effective, and reliable facilities for residential, commercial, and industrial projects. Incumbents are expected to demonstrate a basic understanding of client and customer design workflows, procedures, data entry, and technical skills within the client's specific areas of expertise. Pike Engineering employees play critical roles in ensuring that essential services like electric power, gas, telephone and wireless communications are up and running when people and businesses need them. We offer engineering opportunities in transmission and distribution, substations, smart meter technologies, renewable energy, telecommunications, storm damage assessment and more.
- Learn, practice, and promote all safety policies and procedures at all times
- Apply applicable codes, requirements, regulations, policies, and procedures to assigned work
- Develop skills to safely perform job-site visits and interact with construction personnel
- Learn and demonstrate proficiency with company and client design software and work management tools
- Prepare project and job packages, including material lists, requisitions, labor estimates, site drawings, and construction drawings in a cost-effective manner that maximizes safety and service reliability
- Develop skills to accurately evaluate loading on distribution equipment such as transformers and fusing
- Learn utility construction practices for public right-of-way (ROW) and private land
- Communicate job status regularly to ensure client expectations and deliverable dates are met
- Build and maintain relationships with key internal and external customers while supporting company and client business goals
- Maintain organized project files and records
- Receive mentoring from experienced personnel, supervision, management, and Professional Engineers
- Perform other duties as assigned by management
- Regular attendance is required
- Required: High school diploma or GED
- Preferred: Associate degree from a two-year college or technical school
- Preferred: Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university in non-engineering science, math, or business
- 0-1 year of experience in power distribution engineering, electrical craft work, or GIS/CAD-related work
- None required
- Ability to read and interpret procedure manuals and operational documentation
- Ability to write simple correspondence
- Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or the business community
- Ability to perform basic arithmetic using whole numbers, fractions, and decimals
- Ability to apply fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations
- Ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages and interpret spreadsheets
- Ability to apply basic algebra and geometry concepts
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uncomplicated instructions
- Ability to handle standardized situations with limited variables
- Ability to work with individuals from diverse socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds
- Self-motivated, reliable, trustworthy, and technically competent
- Strong teamwork and collaboration skills
- Demonstrated negotiation and time management skills
- Effective oral and written communication skills
- Proficiency with personal computers and Microsoft Office applications
- Ability to manage multiple tasks effectively
- Valid driver's license and vehicle suitable for business use (mileage reimbursement may apply)
- Ability to participate in storm restoration activities as needed (e.g., Driver, Wire Down Sitter, Clerk)
