Social Worker

Purpose of Job The purpose of this job is to provide rehabilitative programs and community resources to returning citizens housed in the Department of Corrections. Duties include working with care and treatment staff to implement unique rehabilitative plans for returning citizens to reduce recidivism; maintaining a current network of resources to address housing, financial stability, mental wellness, education, substance counseling, and other varying needs; maintaining case files; providing counseling and establishing clear goals; and developing and implementing a schedule to track success or recidivism rate of released participants for up to three years. Job Related Requirements May be required to work on religious holidays. Regular and predictable attendance is required. Must work cooperatively with others. When vehicle operation is required, responsible for safety, readiness and operation of the vehicle and must abide by ACC's safe driving policy. Bachelor's degree in psychology, social work, sociology, or a related field with two years of counseling experience required, preferably in a corrections environment; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities. Master's degree preferred. Must complete certification as a Correctional Counselor within twelve (12) months of hire date. Must possess a valid driver’s license. Clinical experience in a corrections, law enforcement, legal or case management setting preferred. Interview initial intakes to assess offenders and their needs for successful reentry into the community. Conduct office assessment meetings and interviews with offenders and potential (and possibly family members) to identify and address risk factors. Monitors and documents resident's compliance with program and court requirements (reporting, fine and fee payment, community service, completion of courses, evaluations, counseling, treatment programs). Prepares and maintains a computer database of returning citizens and monitors progress through regular phone and email follow‑ups. Tracks overall recidivism and efficacy data of the program to report to the superintendent for a multi‑year period. Maintains quantifiable data to evaluate effectiveness of specific programs and make recommendations for future goals. Works with Care & Treatment staff to assist in arranging necessary education and counseling for each offender’s case; monitors attendance and compliance closely. Attends Classification Committee meetings and participates in interviews and screenings for programs. Acts as liaison for the program, coordinating programs with outside providers. Serves as a backup to administrative staff by performing case‑management functions when necessary. Determines potential problems for a returning citizen’s successful rehabilitation and assists in resolving them. Presents data, suggestions, and information to Department leadership on occasion and as required. Supports administrative staff and residents to obtain successful release addresses and exit plans, including executing interstate compacts. Verifies that releasing residents have adequate, pre‑approved travel arrangements upon release. Obtains certification from the Georgia Department of Corrections or other agencies to facilitate classes and programs that contribute to successful re‑entry. Completes required training as assigned. Performs other related duties as assigned. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the Corrections department as they pertain to the performance of duties relating to the position of Social Worker. Knowledge of the terminology used within the department. Knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database software. Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and/or ordinances related to work release, alternative incarceration of offenders, or incarceration of offenders. Knowledge and application of the principles and dynamics of Evidence Based Practices in Community and Residential Corrections. Knowledge of counseling and evaluation of persons, record‑keeping systems, and corrections/security procedures. Skill to deliver tasks associated with the position, such as interpersonal communications, observation of behavior of individuals, interviewing and vocational assessment, and use of self‑defense techniques. Ability to compile, organize, prepare and maintain an assortment of records, reports and information effectively and according to departmental and/or governmental regulations. Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and other staff members. Ability to facilitate group classes and programs within a correctional setting. Ability to use independent judgment in routine and non‑routine situations. Ability to perform mathematical calculations. Ability to utilize and understand computer applications and techniques as necessary in the completion of daily assignments. Ability to plan, organize and/or prioritize daily assignments and work activities. Ability to comprehend and apply regulations and procedures of the department. Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations. Physical Requirements Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment including personal computer, adding machine, typewriter, van and VCR/TV. Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects or materials. This position requires walking, standing, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, seeing, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to exert up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for light work. Intelligence Requires the ability to learn and understand basic principles and techniques; to acquire and be able to expound on knowledge of topics related to primary occupation; and to make independent judgment in the absence of management. Verbal Aptitude Requires the ability to record and deliver information, to explain procedures, and to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of administrative, technical or professional languages. Numerical Aptitude Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; add and subtract totals; multiply and divide; utilize determine percentages and interpret graphs. Form/Spatial Aptitude Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length, width, and shape, visually with automated office machines. Motor Coordination May require the ability to coordinate hands, fingers, and eyes accurately in using automated office equipment. Requires the ability to lift, push, bend and pull objects or materials using body parts as the position necessitates. Manual Dexterity Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as personal computer, adding machine, typewriter, van and VCR/TV. Must have the ability to use one hand for twisting or turning motion while coordinating other hand with different activities. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination. Color Discrimination Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color. Interpersonal Temperament Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under considerable stress when confronted with an emergency. Physical Communication Requires the ability to talk and/or hear: (Talking - expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words). (Hearing - perceiving nature of sounds by ear).
