CNC Automation & Controls Maintenance Engineer

What a great day looks like

You step onto the floor and a multi-axis VMC throws an axis alarm. Within minutes, you’ve parsed the control logic, traced a configuration fault, and restored production. Later, you run a vibration sweep and laser interferometer check on a 5-axis mill, interpret the data, and schedule proactive work before downtime happens. In the afternoon, you coach a junior tech through precision alignment on a lathe, document findings in the CMMS, and wrap up with a continuous improvement review that saves hours on the next changeover.

What you’ll own

• Diagnose, repair, and prevent failures on complex mechanical, electrical, and control systems for CNC assets; design equipment improvements when needed.
• Program, troubleshoot, and tune CNC/PLC/automation controls to resolve deep software, hardware, and configuration issues.
• Use predictive tools—infrared thermography, ultrasonic testing, power quality analysis, laser interferometry, ball bar, and vibration analysis—to assess condition and plan proactive maintenance.
• Lead and contribute to CI initiatives using proven methodologies to drive uptime, quality results, and cost savings.
• Source parts and supplies, propose engineered alternatives, and implement reliability upgrades.
• Execute maintenance independently to industry standards; uphold 5S and world‑class housekeeping.
• Operate shop equipment as needed (lathe, drill press, grinder) to fabricate/repair parts; perform welding tasks when required.
• Research new methods, tools, and technologies; standardize best practices across ATS sites and update documentation.
• Provide input for cost analyses on new equipment, repair/rebuild proposals, savings, and innovations.
• Keep thorough CMMS histories and analyze data to guide decisions.
• Support sales with technical content for quotations and perform time‑and‑materials duties as required.
• Train and mentor technicians; take on project management responsibilities when assigned.
• Pursue on‑the‑job training and self‑study for ongoing development.
• Follow all safety policies and technical instructions; maintain keen situational awareness to identify and correct unsafe conditions and behaviors.

What you bring

• High school diploma or GED.
• Associate’s degree with a technical focus and 7+ years in a relevant industry; or 10+ years of directly related industry experience.
• Hands‑on mastery of predictive technologies (e.g., vibration analysis, laser interferometer), precision alignment, and maintenance of CNC/process equipment.
• Strong grasp of electrical, mechanical, fluid power, and control systems; able to analyze problems, develop options, and execute repairs.
• Competent with hand and specialized tools; willing to travel as needed.
• Six Sigma experience preferred.

Physical demands & work environment

This role is active: standing and walking frequently; using hands/fingers; reaching; climbing ladders or lifts; balancing at height; and entering confined spaces to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Occasional sitting. At times you’ll lift and move 50+ lbs. Close and color vision are regularly needed. Expect occasional exposure to outdoor weather and electrical hazards. Work occurs primarily in a loud factory setting with potential exposure to hazardous materials and greasy or slippery floors.
