Automation Specialist II

The Automation Specialist II is accountable for the advanced backing of all stages of an automation project including idea and investigation, cost estimation assistance, component choice, network design, control panel design, configuration, device troubleshooting, PLC and HMI programming; field installation and debug; and post-sales support while operating with minimal oversight. An accomplished Automation Specialist II possesses a high level of understanding and expertise in commonly used automation engineering principles, PLC programming, and procedures with the ability to guide/train novice Automation Specialists and a readiness to attend training sessions to enhance their knowledge and skills for progression to the next level.

Essential Functions:

• Comprehend AC/DC control systems with the skill to interpret component specifications.
• Capable of utilizing computer software for engineering design and PLC programming.
• Effective at diagnosing a system and conveying status – orally and in writing.
• Aid and support the process of creating and delivering successful automation.
• Creating and devising layouts for electrical circuits or systems for power and control distribution.
• Back up the Systems Checklist for projects during on-site installation and startup.
• Ability to formulate electrical diagrams with varying degrees of efficiency while having the capacity to identify and rectify errors in electrical diagrams by oneself and others.
• Proficient in assuming the lead on project teams for automation.
• Able to develop functional system test plans for utilization in field commissioning and possessing the ability to contribute written explanations of system operations for technical writings.
• Communicate effectively with other team members and keep Administrative Coordinator informed of schedule; actively utilizing voicemail and email communication; and fostering team cohesion.

Work Schedule:

This position offers a flexible work schedule. General office hours are M-F, 7a-4p or 8a-5p. Working hours will vary when working at a job site to meet the requirements as needed.

Requirements:

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Profound proficiency in multiple programming languages and control device networks for PLCs.
• Aptitude for interpreting and comprehending written specifications, as well as contract drawings and being able to develop a comprehensive design that fulfills these requirements within the electrical design standards and quotation offered for a project. Possesses knowledge of commonly used concepts, practices, and procedures within automation, material handling, water and wastewater systems, and manufacturing.
• Exhibits effective organizational skills and multitasking abilities, with acute attention to detail, the capacity to take directions, and be a collaborative team member with high energy, able to work autonomously and in a team setting.
• Analytical thinker and adept problem-solver
• Self-motivated and possessing strong analytical capabilities
• Exceptional oral and written communication skills
• Willingness to travel to client sites as required and work outside normal business hours based on project and client demands.

Experience Required:

• PLC programming, troubleshooting, and commissioning
• Plan/hardware design
• AutoCAD (AutoCAD E desired)
• Microsoft Office Suite
• Basic understanding of electrical equipment and local building codes such as UL508a, NEC, and NFPA

Education, Experience and Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in engineering – preferably EE, EET or CECS, or equivalent work experience
• 3-5 years in the field or related area.
• Legally authorized to work in the United States
• Ability to obtain airport security clearance as needed
