Senior Gift Planning Officer

Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that supports the independently incorporated Planned Parenthood affiliates, which operate non-profit health centers across the U.S. PPFA also works to educate the public on and advocate for issues of sexual and reproductive health. Formed as the advocacy arm of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Planned Parenthood Action Fund is a separate non-profit membership organization tax-exempt under section 501(c)(4). The Action Fund engages in educational, advocacy, and limited electoral activity, including grassroots organizing, legislative advocacy, and voter education in furtherance of the Planned Parenthood mission.

Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) and Planned Parenthood Action Fund (Action Fund) seek a perceptive and emotionally intelligent Senior Gift Planning Officer. This job reports to the Senior Director, Gift Planning in the Individual Giving department within Development. The Individual Giving department raises philanthropic revenue for Planned Parenthood Federation of America and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund by working with donors and their advisors as well as estates.

The purpose of the Regional Director, Sr. Gift Planning Officer is to work with individuals and their advisors at all stages of the estate planning cycle to solicit and secure new gift commitments for Planned Parenthood Federation of America and the Planned Parenthood Action Fund and retain donor commitments through careful, individualized stewardship over time. In representing Planned Parenthood, the Senior Gift Planning Officer is responsible for working independently toward individual metrics and shared departmental goals related to new gifts, donor meetings, and the conversion of leads into completed gifts. The Senior Gift Planning Officer approaches gift opportunities with creativity and informed judgment in solicitations and when fielding offers of gifts. They build on experience and obtain additional technical knowledge when complexity arises; and implement one-to-one strategies to build the pipeline of both future and current gifts.

• Establishes, cultivates, and sustains long-term relationships with assigned donors and prospects, applying experience and established protocols to secure and retain bequest intents and beneficiary designations as well as outright gifts, life income gifts, and endowments. Meets assigned metrics for new gift commitments through a variety of approaches including formal written proposals, email, and telephone. Drives regular follow-up over time, calibrated to the typical time involved in gift and estate planning decisions.
• Forges personal relationships with donors using expert listening skills, empathy, and maturity, especially when discussing estate and end-of-life planning decisions. While discussing giving, guides donors in moving forward as allies in Planned Parenthood’s work in equity and social justice and as activists in the movement. Addresses donor concerns related to current events and breaking news.
• Drives due diligence on complex gifts including non-cash assets, non-publicly traded stock, or offers of property, and coordinates externally and internally to complete gift transactions or recommend alternative strategies to achieve donor intent. Negotiates gift restrictions effectively to prioritize Planned Parenthood’s current and future needs.
• Assesses assigned donors to identify those best suited for high-touch, individualized relationships over time and develops personal stewardship plans that retain gift commitments. Segments remaining donors into one-to-many approaches or deprioritizes those who are no longer viable prospects.
• Delivers on assigned metrics for donor visits, securing one-to-one meetings with top donors and prospects across their region to solicit new and increased gifts and reconfirm high-value commitments. Plans travel strategically to reach every portfolio donor in a three-year cycle, centering “northstar” donors in trip planning.
• Leverages advanced knowledge of gift planning and gift acceptance policies; income, estate, and federal gift tax; and investments and investment policy when working with donors, their advisors, and colleagues.
• Models gift planning ethical standards and best practices in converting inquiries to completed, secured gift commitments.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

The Senior Gift Planning Officer engages externally and internally with a variety of audiences, including:

• assigned donors. Brings creativity and judgment to solicitations, responds to a wide range of questions, fields offers of gifts, and applies knowledge and persuasion with confidence to secure completed gift commitments. Demonstrates relationship-building through individualized stewardship for the retention of donors throughout their lives.
• external experts and donor advisors. Consults a variety of sources to research gift opportunities and develop strategies based on the most recent legal, tax, and industry information available. Pursues ongoing professional development in the gift planning field.
• affiliate staff. Builds trust and collaboration by assisting with gifts and advising gift planning program strategy, resolving concerns and presents training independently.
• gift officers. Serves as a technical resource for major gifts officers shaping gift strategies and deepening donor relationships.
• the senior director and national director. Delivers strategy grounded in experience and research, demonstrating problem-solving skills.
• organizational leadership. Exercises judgement when to involve senior leadership in donor recognition and in conveying donor feedback and concerns.

• BA/BS degree required; MA/MS degree or additional certifications preferred
• 6+ years of development experience, including a minimum of 3-5 years in Gift Planning
• Working knowledge of legal and tax issues related to charitable giving and a capacity to research and develop knowledge further
• High proficiency in Google and Microsoft products; hands-on database skills, and demonstrated experience using gift calculation software
• Contributes to building a diverse, equitable, and inclusive gift planning program by applying knowledge of the gift planning needs of diverse communities and those in a range of family structures.
• Willing to provide coverage at end-of-fiscal year and the end-of-calendar year holiday periods, monitoring telephone and email to ensure donor needs are met and gifts are completed.
• Candidates must possess a valid driver's license and maintain a safe driving record.

Travel: 15-20% domestic travel annually, for up to eight trips per year.
