Job Description
Job Title: Surgical Technician

Experience: Minimum 1 year of OR scrubbing experience preferred
License: Basic Life Support (BLS) certification for healthcare providers
Certifications: Active National Certification as an ORT in Surgery or Certified Surgical Technologist preferred


Must-Have:
Completion of an accredited Operating Room Technician program
Graduated from a non-accredited surgical tech program within the past six months
Two years of scrub tech experience in hospital/military surgical services within the last three years


Description:
Performs various duties as a member of the surgical team to ensure a safe and successful operative procedure.
This position functions under the supervision of a Registered Nurse and directly reports to Surgical Services management.
It is expected that the Surgical Technician will support system-wide surgical operations initiatives and practices.
This person will actively participate in the surgical operations safety plan as outlined.
Maintains accountability for ensuring the operating room and all surgical items meet sterilization criteria.
Maintains the sterile field and ensures a safe environment.
Recognizes and addresses sharps and fire safety processes.
Prepares the operating room and instruments for the surgical procedure.
May assist with sterile processing.
Assists the surgeon(s) during the procedure while staying within the scope of practice.
Can identify emergency situations and exercises judgment when implementing procedures to respond to emergencies.
Assists with room turnover, cleaning, and preparation for the next procedure upon completion of the procedure.
Performs scrub duties and maintains sterile supplies and technique.
Assists in nursing care and preparation of surgical patients.
Assembles, organizes, and completes case carts according to doctor's preference lists.
Provides appropriate instrumentation, suture, and all supplies as requested while maintaining a sterile environment.
Counts sponges, needles, blades, and instruments using proper technique and established policy.
Assists in maintenance and care of specimens and prepares for laboratory analysis.
Handles specimens, implants, dressings, soiled instruments, contaminated materials, and sharps according to established policy and recommended standards of practice.
Assists with timely turnover of rooms, including cleanup, replacement, and restocking of supplies and equipment.
Cares for instruments and equipment.
Promotes organizational mission, vision, and values and abides by service behavior standards.
Performs other duties as assigned.
May be required to float to other departments based on business need.
May be required to be placed on-call during a regularly scheduled shift.
