Deputy Coordinator, Investigation and Resolution

Job Overview Reporting to an Assistant Vice President, Office of Civil Rights Compliance, the Deputy Coordinator for Investigation and Resolution in the Office of Civil Rights Compliance (OCRC) assists in directing the operations of the OCRC with regard to formal and alternative resolutions, managing timely, high‑quality, fair, and thorough investigations. Job Accountabilities Assign and supervise the timely implementation of formal and alternative resolutions for formal complaints in accordance with university policy, applicable law, and established timeframes. Develop and modify uniform investigatory templates and related materials. Review investigative reports and related documents (e.g., evidence reviews). Ensure investigators adhere to all applicable laws, policies, and procedures. Make recommendations to units and schools based on investigatory findings; advise the Vice President, TitleIX Coordinator, and/or Assistant Vice President regarding mandatory and discretionary dismissals. Issue findings pursuant to the discrimination, harassment, and retaliation resolution process in collaboration with the Assistant Vice President. Guide investigative staff regarding revisions or modifications of reports, correspondence, or related documentation; set and monitor deadlines for investigators. Maintain accurate, comprehensive documentation of all steps related to rescue processes, including alternative and formal resolutions. Supervise a team of approximately five investigators, providing training, professional development, and performance appraisals (mid‑point, annual, and periodic feedback). Ensure fair and equitable caseloads and address performance issues promptly. Handle administrative duties related to assigned investigators, such as leave requests, training, and equipment. Stay current on legislation, law, and trends related to the field; ensure investigatory methods and procedures reflect current standards and regulations. Review and assess departmental operations for effectiveness and efficiency; recommend improvements as needed. Read pertinent literature, attend meetings, and participate in professional associations. Establish and maintain an active network of campus partners and professional contacts. Serve as a subject‑matter expert on university policy and all civil rights laws that apply to the USC community. Conduct training, outreach, and educational programs independently or with OCRC team members to ensure the campus community understands policy and resolution options. Assist with creation of office materials that communicate OCRC’s mission and clarify resolution options. Identify training needs for faculty, staff, and students based on issues, situations, or complaint trends; make training recommendations as appropriate. Create and maintain partnerships with campus stakeholders, including faculty, staff, students, and other units interacting with the OCRC office. Perform other duties as assigned or requested. Preferred Qualifications Juris Doctor and 7 years of progressive responsibility in investigations and resolution with students, faculty, and/or staff in a higher‑education setting. Experience with best practices in higher‑education compliance, effectively addressing discrimination, harassment, and retaliation. Demonstrated understanding of the university’s culture, mission, and values. Proven leadership ability and managerial experience of a team. Strong commitment to USC’s Unifying Values through actions and words. Minimum Education & Experience Minimum Education: Master’s degree. Minimum Experience: 5 years in a relevant field (e.g., law, social work, psychology, higher education, or related). Five or more years’ experience performing or overseeing investigations in the field of public health, social work, sociology, educational psychology, student affairs, or a related field. Salary The annual base salary range for this position is $111,276–$180,250.00.
