Neonatal Nurse Practitoner

Job Summary Enhance the nature and quality of care for a group of at‑risk or critically ill neonates/infants. Collaborate with the Medical Director, NICU Unit Director, staff nurses, and physicians to plan, implement, and evaluate medical and nursing care. Provide 24/7 in‑house coverage for all Neonatal Intensive Care Units and high‑risk deliveries. Responsibilities Primary medical management and emergency stabilization of critically ill neonates and infants. Emergency transport of neonatal patients. Preceptorship of NNP students and teaching of NICU residents. Staff development, education, and parental education. Discharge planning and coordination with discharge coordinators. Participate in data collection and outcome measurement, and manage a caseload of patients in the NICU. Provide 24/7 coverage for all NICU units and high‑risk deliveries. Assist in daily rounds and collaborate with the PCCs, staff nurses, and coordination staff for effective care planning. Job Duties Utilize approved medical practice processes for patient care. Communicate pertinent information to families and team members. Provide care based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related criteria appropriate to neonatal patients. Maintain required clinical knowledge, technical skills, training, and credentials; pursue professional development. Provide education to infants' families, staff, other health professionals, and the community. Maintain an attitude of inquiry toward medical practices and patient care outcomes; may develop research methodology. Work as a contributing team member and assume leadership when needed to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration. Adapt communication style to the specific patient population and family needs. Perform other related duties as required. Education Master's degree in nursing (except for those employed prior to 2003 with an NNP certificate). Work Experience Minimum 2 years of related nursing experience. Certifications Current Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Nurse Practitioner License in the state of practice. Certification as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner through the National Certification Corporation (NCC) as directed by the State Board of Nursing. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification from the American Heart Association. Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification. S.T.A.B.L.E. certification. Eligibility for limited prescriptive authority in Louisiana. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) Knowledge of APRN procedures specific to the role: chest tube placement, endotracheal intubation, lumbar puncture, needle thoracotomy, percutaneous central line placement, peripheral artery puncture and cannulation, removal of thoracotomy tube, suprapubic bladder aspiration, umbilical artery catheterization, umbilical vein catheterization, and ventricular catheter reservoir aspiration. Computer skills and dexterity for data entry and retrieval of patient information. Proficiency with Windows‑style applications and keyboard. Ability to work a flexible schedule (24/7, weekend, holiday, on‑call availability). Effective verbal and written communication skills; ability to present information clearly and professionally to various audiences. Physical and Environmental Demands Medium work: intermittent lifting of 20–50 pounds or 10–25 pounds frequently; ability to stand for prolonged periods; must be able to travel throughout and between facilities; stoop, bend, reach, and grab with arms and hands; exposure to blood, body fluids, and potential hazards associated with medication and waste handling.
