Position Summary

The School Crossing Guard supports student safety by assisting students, families, and pedestrians in safely crossing designated streets and intersections before and after school. The Crossing Guard must remain alert to traffic conditions, identify potential hazards, and provide clear directions to motorists and pedestrians. This position requires consistent attendance and punctuality during assigned morning and afternoon crossing periods. Work schedules and hours are based on the RYSS academic calendar and campus needs.

Education and Experience

Minimum Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years of age.
• High school diploma or GED preferred.
• Sufficient education and communication skills to understand instructions, safety procedures, and complete required documentation.
• Previous experience working with children, schools, traffic safety, security, or the public preferred.
• Must successfully complete all required background checks

Major Responsibilities and Duties

• Assist students and pedestrians in safely crossing streets at designated locations.
• Direct traffic using an approved handheld STOP sign and appropriate hand signals.
• Monitor traffic patterns and identify safe opportunities for students to cross.
• Remain alert to unsafe driving, traffic hazards, and other potentially dangerous conditions.
• Record and report vehicles that disregard crossing instructions or create safety concerns.
• Immediately report accidents, emergencies, suspicious activity, or hazardous conditions to the appropriate campus administrator.
• Report to the assigned crossing location on time and remain at the post for the duration of the assignment.
• Notify the supervisor immediately if unable to report for an assigned shift.
• Maintain and properly use all district-issued safety equipment.
• Report lost or damaged equipment promptly.
• Accurately complete and submit required timekeeping documentation.
• Maintain a professional appearance and positive interactions with students, families, staff, and community members.
• Follow all RYSS safety procedures, campus expectations, and organizational policies.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

• Ability to recognize traffic patterns and determine when it is safe for pedestrians to cross.
• Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.
• Ability to observe approaching vehicles and pedestrian activity from appropriate distances.
• Ability to remain attentive and respond quickly to emergencies or unsafe conditions.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Ability to work effectively and professionally with children, parents, staff, and community members.
• Ability to exercise good judgment and maintain composure in stressful situations.
• Must be dependable, punctual, and available for assigned morning and afternoon shifts.
• Must have reliable transportation.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Mental Demands

• Maintain alertness and concentration throughout assigned crossing periods.
• Exercise sound judgment and respond quickly to changing traffic conditions.
• Maintain emotional control during stressful or emergency situations.

Physical Demands

• Stand and walk for extended periods.
• Ability to hold and raise a handheld STOP sign while directing traffic.
• Frequently use arms and hands to provide visible traffic signals.
• Ability to see approaching vehicles and pedestrians and hear traffic and warning signals.
• Ability to safely enter and exit designated roadway areas as required.

Environmental Factors

• Work is primarily performed outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Regular exposure to vehicle traffic, noise, heat, cold, rain, and other outdoor conditions.
• Work is generally required during morning arrival and afternoon dismissal periods.
