Come join the Fairfax County Health Department school health team and use your skills and abilities to “protect, promote and improve the health and quality of life for all who live, work and play in our community.” About Fairfax County Health Department Fairfax County Health Department is seeking dedicated Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) to improve the health and wellbeing of students in Fairfax County public schools. You will be the leading advocate for public health and well‑being and care onsite, contributing to both school and community health. Role Responsibilities Provide basic nursing care services and supervision for students in a Fairfax County public school setting. Assess and determine students’ health status and follow appropriate protocols to provide care, screening, and documentation. Monitor and manage students with acute or chronic disease and/or disabilities; document care services in accordance with standard protocol. Support individual care needs, including insulin monitoring, and administer medication and treatment in line with health standards and practices. Manage medications, routine school health room activities, and update student health records daily. Assist in monitoring and updating student care plans. Compile and submit health room statistics and reports using computer data entry skills. Respond to medical emergencies and perform CPR and first aid. Maintain current BLS certification and licensing requirements. Multiple positions may be filled from this announcement. Note: Fairfax County School Health Licensed Practical Nurses are full‑time merit positions that are scheduled to work less than 12 months (approximately 38 weeks per year). Work schedule will be based on the service needs of the Health Department and Fairfax County public standard school year calendar. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of practical nursing skills gained through an accredited practical nursing program. Skill in performing technical nursing procedures (e.g., injections, venipuncture, blood pressure screening). Ability to identify questionable test findings. Ability to perform CPR and use an AED or perform emergency treatment for life‑threatening conditions. Ability to elicit sufficient pertinent medical information from a client and record a medical history that is complete and accurate. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing with a diverse population. Ability to document care provided according to record‑management guidelines. Ability to maintain and update electronic health records and prepare routine reports. Ability to compile clinical statistics. Ability to use sound judgment and work independently within established policies, procedures, and guidelines. Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with clients and staff members. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from an accredited Practical Nursing program. Two years of experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse or two years of related experience providing medical services in a public health / community health setting (e.g., Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Technician, or other relevant experience). Certificates and Licenses Required Current license or multistate licensure privilege to practice as a Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification (required within 30 days). AED Certification (required within 30 days). CPR Certification (required within 30 days). Special Requirements Criminal background check, Child Protective Services Registry check, and sanction screening to satisfaction of the employer. TB screening upon hire. Work Schedule Scheduled work hours will vary between 7:00 AM to 4:15 PM based on assigned FCPS school needs and FCPS bell schedule. Some teacher workdays and unscheduled work periods during FCPS designated winter, spring, and summer breaks may be required. This position is emergency/essential services personnel. The appointee is required to report for duty during inclement weather and/or other emergencies. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge and understanding of a school health program and experience providing health care services to school‑aged children in ethnically diverse populations. Knowledge of medication management administration practices and experience reviewing and administering childhood vaccinations. High level of integrity and discretion in handling confidential information and professionalism in dealing with students, parents, and colleagues. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to provide general health information to school‑aged children and families with a wide variety of health problems under the supervision of a registered nurse. Strong interpersonal abilities to communicate effectively and clearly with a diverse population and various stakeholders. Ability to work independently and on interdisciplinary teams. Proficiency with technology and the ability to learn and adapt to new systems, software, Microsoft Office, and digital tools as needed. Strong critical thinking and problem‑solving skills to ensure the safety and wellbeing of students. Flexibility and adaptability to respond effectively to situations and meet public health goals. Physical Requirements Ability to alternate between sitting and standing on a frequent basis; walk, kneel, bend/stoop, extend the arms to reach both outward and upward, and climb stairs; lift, push, pull, or carry objects or young children, as much as 10 or more pounds, frequently; use hands and fingers to grasp, handle, feel, or manipulate small objects or equipment; read data on a computer monitor; operate keyboard‑driven equipment and computer and use of touchscreen; read, write, understand, interpret and apply information at a moderately complex level; frequently communicate and be understood when communicating in‑person, over the phone or computer; maintain BLS certification and physically perform CPR/AED techniques; generally work in an office/school health room environment, yet may occasionally be required to perform job duties outside the typical office setting.
