POSITION TITLE : Certified Surgical Technologist (Full-Time)
SUPERVISION PROVIDED BY : Physician and/or Registered Nurse
WORK SCHEDULE:
- Monday to Friday. No on-call duties, night shifts, weekends, or holidays. Comprehensive benefits package available.
OVERVIEW OF ROLE:
Surgical technologists, often referred to as scrubs or operating room technicians, play a vital role in assisting with surgical procedures under the guidance of surgeons, registered nurses, or other surgical staff. They are integral members of the surgical team, which typically includes surgeons, anesthesiologists, and circulating nurses.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
- Completion of an accredited surgical technologist program.
- Certification as a CST, or eligibility based on state regulations allowing for grandfathering without certification.
- Preferred 1-2 years of clinical experience in an operating room environment.
- Basic Life Support certification is mandatory.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Prepare and maintain surgical instruments and medical equipment for procedures.
- Set up the operating room by establishing a sterile field, including instruments, equipment, sterile drapes, and solutions prior to surgery.
- Adhere to state and federal regulations while caring for patients.
- Conduct pre-procedure preparations on the patient’s skin and body.
- Perform safety checks on necessary equipment and supplies before the procedure begins.
- Assemble both sterile and non-sterile equipment, ensuring functionality.
- Assist with patient preparation for procedures.
- Transport patients to the procedure room as needed.
- Help position patients on the procedure table.
- Drape patients with surgical coverings according to the procedure requirements.
- Pass instruments and sterile supplies to surgeons and their assistants.
- Retract, cut sutures, and perform other tasks under the supervision of the operating physician.
- Participate in counting sponges, needles, supplies, and instruments based on the procedure type.
- Assist in preparing specimens and managing their disposition.
- Apply dressings post-procedure.
- Help transfer patients from the procedure bed to the stretcher after surgery.
- Clean and restock the procedure room after use.
- Gather supplies and instruments for upcoming procedures.
- Support the maintenance of physician preference cards and inventory management.
- Assist with decontamination, cleaning, sterilization, and quality testing related to sterilization and high-level disinfection.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to remain on your feet for extended periods and assist with lifting or moving patients.
- Involves sitting and standing typical of an office environment.
- Capacity to focus for up to four hours at a time.
- Effective verbal communication skills, both in person and over the phone.
- Proficiency in using a computer keyboard and viewing a monitor.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
- Must demonstrate the necessary knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care for patients.
- Ability to utilize established communication channels effectively.
- Exhibit strong interpersonal skills with patients, colleagues, and other healthcare team members.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Surgical technologists operate in clean, well-lit, and well-ventilated settings. They must stand for long durations and maintain alertness during surgeries. Occasionally, they may encounter communicable diseases and unpleasant sights, odors, and materials.
WORKING CONDITIONS: May require occasional evening and/or weekend shifts.
