Oral Examination: Week of July 13, 2026 To learn more about Parks and Recreation Department, THE POSITION The Park Maintenance Worker III (PMW III) is the advanced skill level classification in the series. The PMW III performs specialized maintenance and repairs and leads a maintenance crew performing varied skilled and semi-skilled maintenance activities in parks, recreational areas and publicly owned landscaped areas, supervises entrance station, cash-handling and park business activities, provides information to the public and responds to public inquires. This individual is assigned lead worker responsibilities and works with a greater level of responsibility and may be assigned to work at various County parks. This position is subject to overtime, standby, weekend, holiday, and callback assignments. Works under general direction and performs related duties as assigned.

- Perform specialized maintenance and repair tasks of parks, landscaped areas, historic buildings and structures, and public facilities;
- Inspect grounds and facilities for needed cleaning and repair;
- Inspect recreation areas, shorelines, and adjacent habitats to identify and address environmental concerns;
- Prepare Maintenance Schedules;
- Coordinate and lead the work of assigned crews by delegating tasks and providing clear instructions on work procedures to ensure established standards are met;
- Monitor crew performance and report progress, issues, and outcomes to supervisor;
- Train crew members in maintenance and operations techniques;
- Prepare financial reports and maintain financial records;
- Check work progress periodically to ensure schedules are met and work is completed according to plans and specifications;
- Supervise and train personnel;
- Assist supervisor in the planning and scheduling of maintenance and operations activities;
- Handle money and perform cash control and closeout procedures on the cash register;
- Provide customer service to park and reservoir guests;
- Campsite electrical and plumbing repairs;
- Trail work, lawn care, tree trimming;
- Maintains and restores natural areas through vegetation management, debris removal, and minor habitat enhancement;
- Monitors and reports conditions that may impact water quality, such as illegal dumping, fuel spills, or unsafe waste disposal:
- Provides information and guidance to park visitors regarding resource protection, including proper use of waterways and adherence to environmental rules;
- Bathroom repairs;
- Communicate both verbally and in writing;
- Keep records of work completed, materials used and crew time on projects;
- Ensure that safe working practices are followed; and
- Respond to emergency situations.
Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education/Experience) KNOWLEDGE
- Proper methods of planting, cultivating and caring for hedges, trees, shrubs, lawns and flowers;
- Use and care of gardening materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of parks and recreational facilities;
- All aspects of construction and maintenance methods relative to parks;
- General Building Code provisions;
- Fundamentals of basic plumbing, electrical and carpentry work;
- Operation, uses and repairs of trucks, tractors and other mechanical equipment used in park maintenance and landscape work;
- Common safety practices and procedures; and
- Hazards and safety precautions in construction and maintenance work.
- Perform ground maintenance and repair work;
- Operate power equipment and vehicles, such as tractors and attachments;
- Use and care for hand and power tools;
- Identify potential safety hazards;
- Perform heavy physical labor;
- Instruct, direct and supervise the work of others;
- Maintain good working relationships with co-workers and members of the general public;
- Analyze situations accurately and take effective action;
- Read blueprints, interpret and work from plans and specifications;
- Estimate material and labor requirements;
- Prepare and maintain routine records and reports;
- Recognize common plant diseases and inspect pests;
- Apply or supervise the application of pesticides in accordance with State regulations;
- Understand and follow written and oral instructions;
- Effectively lead workers performing maintenance and operations tasks; and
- Keep written records and prepare reports.
- Three (3) years of responsible experience in park maintenance, construction, and landscaping work equivalent to a Stanislaus County Park Maintenance II classification. One (1) year of which must have been in the capacity of leading small crews; AND
- Obtain licensing or certification in one of the following areas: Class A or B driver license, arborist, playground equipment safety inspector, backflow prevention device tester, pool operator, State Water Resource Control Board of California Grade 1 certification in: water distribution operator, waste water treatment plant operator. Note: License/certification is dependent on departmental need. Employees who are unable to obtain the license/certification within 12 months of hire may have their probationary period extended up to an additional six (6) months. Failure to obtain the license/certification within 18 months may result in demotion or termination; AND
- A Pesticide Applicator's Certificate issued by the State of California, including laws, regulations and basic principles, landscape maintenance, and rights-of-way, must be obtained within one (1) year from the date of appointment. Failure to do so may result in demotion or termination; AND
- Possess and maintain a valid California Driver's License.
