Director, Compliance Services

The Director, Compliance Services, works under the direction of the Associate Athletics Director, Compliance Services. The position works cooperatively with athletic department staff, coaches, and student-athletes to provide advice and information on compliance-related matters as well as to resolve and monitor compliance-related issues. The position will serve as the subject matter expert responsible for best practices and internal accountability for one or more specific bylaws, overseeing the day-to-day tasks of one or more staff members, being the compliance liaison for all applicable rules for a select number of varsity programs and DAPER departments, collaborating with senior management as required, and serving as a leader within the office for setting policies, calendars, and other initiatives.Run the day-to-day compliance operations for a select number of sport programs, ensuring compliance with all NCAA bylaws, including but not limited to the following areas:Bylaw 11: coaching/staff limitations and trackingBylaw 12: agents; student-athlete employment; promotional activities; seasons of competition; athletics eligibility (fka amateurism)Bylaw 13: recruiting materials; contacts and evaluations tracking; official and unofficial visits; publicity approval; camps and clinics; precollege expensesBylaw 14: initial, transfer and continuing eligibility; eligibility waivers; full-time enrollment; roster managementBylaw 15: financial aid awards - tracking, approvals, and disbursementBylaw 16: complimentary tickets; travel per diem; team entertainment; awards; benefits; Student Assistance FundBylaw 17: House roster limitations, CARA, RARA, playing season, TMP, foreign tour; outside competitionBylaw 20: sport sponsorship reportingBylaw 22: name, image, and likenessAt Stanford, every employee plays a part in our mission for a better tomorrow—from researchers to operations and from food services to educators. See Admin Guide 1.7.4: Equal Employment Opportunity, Non-Discrimination, and Affirmative Action Policy; Know Your Rights: Workplace Discrimination is Illegal.Core Duties:Lead in preparing varying NCAA, Conference, or Stanford reports.Lead with providing NCAA and Conference rules interpretations.Lead with research and preparation of NCAA waivers as deemed applicable.Lead and/or assist with projects that further advance the integrity of the Compliance Services Office.Lead with investigation and preparation of rules violation reports and student-athlete reinstatement requests.Assist with fiscal monitoring of Compliance Services budget and budgetary decisionsServe as the compliance liaison to other DAPER units as assigned.Serve as the compliance liaison to non-athletics campus units, as assigned.Review, coordinate, and implement rules education initiatives and policy/procedure updates.Identify risk areas and propose solutions, including drafting, implementing, and monitoring DAPER policies.Supervise and train junior staff and ensuring training in place for new DAPER employeesExpected to work autonomously on day-to-day responsibilities while endeavoring to work independently on projects intended to better the processes and efficiency of the compliance services office as a whole, using appropriate discretion and ensuring actions are in line with institutional and departmental best interests.Serve as subject matter expert across multiple NCAA bylaws to keep team members informed on current legislation within the applicable bylaw(s) and apprised of upcoming deadlines or obligations for compliance sport liaisons to work with their teams.Minimum Educationand ExperienceBachelor’s degree and five years of athletics compliance experience, or other relevant experience in compliance, industry, higher education, or combination of education and relevant experience. Master’s degree and/or J.D. preferred and NCAA and/or athletics compliance experience.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Commitment to and knowledge of NCAA rules.Demonstrated ability to prioritize work and concurrently advance multiple projects.Demonstrated excellent organizational skills.Demonstrated ability to take initiative and ownership of projects.Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.Ability to routinely and independently exercise sound judgment in making decisions.Demonstrated experience working independently and as part of a team.Subject matter expertise of athletics compliance activitiesAbility to facilitate and lead the work of others.Excellent judgment, high ethical standards, and the capacity to deal effectively with a widely varied array of legal issues.Ability to perform effectively, calmly, and collegially under pressure.Exceptional ability to communicate and calibrate risk with clarity and directness.Ability to set priorities, coordinate multiple projects, meet deadlines and work with minimal supervision.Demonstrated integrity and wisdom with the ability to inspire confidence and trust.Certificates and Licenses RequiredCompliance certification preferredFull timePosting Date: 2026-09-11
