Communications Technician

Job Overview Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory is hiring a Communications Technician in its Information Technology Division. This role supports the Lab's telecom, network, and communications infrastructure by installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting structured cabling; supporting telephony and network service moves, adds, changes and deletions; and managing telecommunications spaces, including power distribution, equipment racks, environmental monitoring, and cable management across the campus. Parental bonding leave (for both mothers and fathers) Pet insurance Job Responsibilities Install fiber and copper communications cable inside buildings from the backbone to individual station drops. Install and terminate fiber and copper outside plant communications cable between buildings. Troubleshoot problems related to telephone devices and circuits. Diagnose and repair indoor and outdoor plant cable and splices. Construct, test and document fiber circuits. Complete Move / Add / Change requests for telephone and network devices installed on inside building communications wiring. Work with others during cable installations ensuring safety, efficiency and effectiveness. Handle assignments that are semi‑routine, recognizing the need for occasional deviation from accepted practice. Receive little instruction on routine daily work; general instructions on new assignments. At Level 2: handle moderately complex assignments, using judgment to resolve issues and make recommendations. Qualifications – Level 1 Combination of 1 to 2 years of relevant technical experience and/or education. Minimum of 1 year of work experience in telephone, networking cable, and circuit installation, demonstrating work under general supervision with established guidelines and SOPs. Demonstrated experience providing excellent customer service. Experience in at least one of the following areas: telecommunications plant and building wiring methods; inside building cable route planning; Category 5/6 TIA‑568B/C wiring installation standards; fiber optic cable installation and termination; telephone and network circuit installation and testing using specialized test equipment; firestop procedures and methods; telephone closet backboard layout design and construction; BIX, M66, AT&T punch down blocks; PBX telephone sets and data devices; twisted pair Ethernet circuits. Professional and courteous interaction with all staff levels. Physical requirements: lift and pull up to 50 lbs.; stooping, bending, crawling in confined areas, climbing ladders and stairs; work in noisy, dusty, dirty and slippery areas where hardhats required. Availability for occasional overtime (evenings, early mornings, weekends, holidays). Effective communication with customers regarding project status and completion. Qualifications – Level 2 Combination of 2 to 4 years of relevant technical experience and/or education. Minimum of two years of work experience in telephone, networking cable, and circuit installation, with work under general supervision using established guidelines and SOPs. Desired Skills and Knowledge Independently test or extend lines to buildings from the main demarcation point. Experience with network troubleshooting: DHCP, Voice VLAN, VoIP, WiFi. General knowledge of T1 communications lines. Independently diagnose and test problems related to underground wiring or splices and recommend repair actions. Knowledge of industry standard fire protection, HVAC, and electrical system. Additional Information Appointment: full‑time, 6‑month term with possibility of extension or conversion to career appointment based on performance and funds. Salary: Level 1 – $34.27–$41.21 hourly; Level 2 – $38.15–$45.86 hourly. Background check required. Work Modality: primarily at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA. Relocation: not eligible for relocation assistance. Work authorization: must be eligible to work in the U.S.; visa sponsorship not available.
