Staff Accountant - Nonprofit

A mission-driven nonprofit organization in Bergen County is seeking a Staff Accountant to support a broad range of accounting and finance functions. Reporting to the Controller, this position will take ownership of general ledger activities, account reconciliations, month-end close, financial reporting, grant accounting, and audit support. The ideal candidate has 2-5 years of progressive accounting experience , strong attention to detail, sound professional judgment, and the ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities and deadlines. Key Responsibilities General Ledger & Reconciliations: Prepare and review monthly general ledger, bank, and cash account reconciliations; investigate and resolve discrepancies and elevate complex issues as appropriate. Journal Entries & Month-End Close: Prepare and post journal entries and complete assigned month-end close activities accurately and within established deadlines. Payroll Accounting: Prepare payroll-related journal entries and reconcile payroll accounts in coordination with HR and payroll teams. Revenue Recognition & Deferred Revenue: Perform revenue recognition activities in accordance with GAAP and applicable nonprofit accounting standards; maintain and track deferred revenue schedules. Budget & Variance Analysis: Assist with annual budgeting, forecasting, budget modifications, and analysis of variances between budget and forecast; prepare explanations for management review. Financial Reporting: Assist with the preparation of monthly and annual financial statements, supporting schedules, and financial analyses. Audit Support: Coordinate with external auditors and provide supporting documentation for annual financial statement, retirement plan, and other related audits. Prepare audit schedules and respond to information requests. Assist with Form 990 support. Internal Controls: Maintain and assist in strengthening internal controls designed to safeguard organizational assets and minimize control deficiencies. Grant Accounting & Compliance: Track grant expenditures, assist with financial reporting, maintain supporting documentation, and help ensure compliance with applicable grant requirements. Accounting Systems: Work with accounting software providers and internal stakeholders to maintain systems, troubleshoot issues, and identify opportunities for process improvements. Confidentiality & Compliance: Protect confidential financial information and consistently follow established policies, procedures, and internal controls. Special Projects: Support financial analysis, utilization reviews, process-improvement initiatives, and other accounting or finance projects as assigned. Qualifications & Skills Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field. 2+ years of accounting or finance experience , including hands-on experience with reconciliations, journal entries, and month-end close. Experience with financial statement preparation and reporting. Working knowledge of payroll accounting. Understanding of fund accounting and nonprofit accounting principles preferred. Experience working with confidential and sensitive financial information.Strong analytical, research, and problem-solving skills. Ability to independently investigate and resolve general ledger and reconciliation issues. Strong attention to detail and excellent organizational and time-management skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines with limited supervision. Sound professional judgment and a self-directed approach to work. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments and organizational levels. Proficiency with QuickBooks and Microsoft Office, particularly Excel. Advanced Excel skills, including PivotTables, XLOOKUP/VLOOKUP, and SUMIFS , preferred. Experience with Microsoft Teams, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat preferred. Knowledge of GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
