SUMMARY This position is located in the Rhode Island Hospital Pharmacy Retail location. Under the supervision of a Pharmacy Supervisor or Pharmacist‑in‑charge, the candidate coordinates activities and functions of pharmacy technicians, students, and support personnel in assigned areas of the department. Responsibilities include orienting, training, assigning work, maintaining work schedules, and evaluating the performance of subordinate staff in accordance with established policies, procedures, and standards of practice. The role also involves performing duties of other pharmacy technician job categories as needed and supporting the department’s pharmacy services across all patient age groups (neonate, child, adolescent, adult, geriatric). RESPONSIBILITIES Orient, train, schedule, provide functional guidance to, and evaluate performance of subordinate pharmacy technicians, students, and support staff. Continuously review and analyze operations, recommending and implementing operational changes and new technologies that increase efficiency and service level in collaboration with Pharmacy Supervisor or Manager. Participate in recruitment, retention, performance enhancement, and competency assessment of subordinate staff. Ensure compliance with established policies, procedures, and labor contracts. Provide actionable feedback to employees to promote teamwork and workplace satisfaction. Assist in developing tools and standards to establish and improve competency levels of pharmacy technicians, students, and support staff (orientation, in‑service training, competency assessments). Communicate effectively with subordinate staff, management, and customers to facilitate smooth operations. Communicate timely and accurately (written and verbal) regarding operational changes and quality improvement activities. Participate in continuous quality assessment and improvement activities, including medication safety initiatives. Serve on or lead committees, task forces, and performance improvement teams as assigned. Maintain pharmacy information systems and electronic drug dispensing systems (e.g., Omnicell, Pyxis) and perform routine preventive maintenance on equipment. Oversee medication and pharmaceutical supply purchasing processes, procurement, vendor management, recalls, and annual inventories. Oversee mandatory safety, environmental, and infection control education and training programs in line with hospital, departmental, state, and federal standards. Coordinate data collection for quality assessment and improvement activities of the Pharmacy. Assist in workflow direction of Pharmacy Technicians, Pharmacy Technician Specialists, and support staff. Perform personnel evaluations, participate in recruitment activities, scheduling, and corrective action as needed. Regularly perform duties of other pharmacy technician job categories. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS High school graduate or equivalent with one to two years of college credit. Completed a high school or college level algebra course with a minimum grade of B. Completed the Rhode Island Hospital or The Miriam Hospital Pharmacy Technician Training Program. Successfully obtained and maintains current national pharmacy technician certification (CPhT). Maintains current unrestricted licensure as a pharmacy technician in the State of Rhode Island. Two to three years of progressively responsible pharmacy technician experience, preferably at Rhode Island Hospital or The Miriam Hospital. Effective interpersonal and communication skills. Knowledge of pharmacy information systems and electronic drug dispensing technology. Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite. WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Extended periods of standing and walking; requires visual and manual dexterity to operate a computer. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY None.
