Who We Are

The Residential College is a four-year liberal arts program located in the East Quad University Residence Hall. Since 1967, the Residential College (RC) has offered undergraduate students a unique living-learning experience in which they benefit from being members of a small college community with full access to the offerings and resources of a world-class research university. This pairing of living and learning creates a dynamic community of undergraduates which has singular and diverse needs that condition, in turn, the composition of the RC staff and its work plans. The distinctive educational mission of the RC is to enable students to develop their intellectual interests and creative talents in an environment in which they can find their own voice and relate learning with doing. The RC faculty and staff challenge students to take the initiative in shaping their own education, to participate actively in classes and in extra-curricular programs, to think critically about what they are learning and reflectively about what they are doing, and to engage with the University community as well as the outside world.

Job Summary

The Residential College Office of Academic Services is the nexus of interaction between the living and the learning. The team fosters a connection between the students and the faculty while guiding and advising students on their steps through UM and beyond. Under the supervision of the RC Director of Academic Services, the RC Academic Services Coordinator oversees the collaborative efforts of academic services in the Residential College.

Hours: Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 4:30 PM (40 hours)

Work Mode: Hybrid

Salary Range: $47,600 to $59,500

Responsibilities *

35% - Academic Advising

  • Advise a caseload of ~215 Residential College students each year

  • Provide academic advising, academic planning, and academic difficulties support to RC students on a scheduled and drop-in basis

20% - Academic Affairs and Student Administration

  • Work with faculty, students, and the Registrars Office to resolve issues.

  • Partner with the director to manage RC graduation requests, and assist in organizing the RCs efforts in relation to graduation.

  • Maintain electronic student files and other student file paperwork.

  • Oversee transfer processes of students between the RC and LSA.

  • Oversee processing of declarations, major releases, language proficiency posting, overrides, transfer outs/ins, permissions, and exceptions.

  • Create and maintain student records in various UM systems, including transfer and term withdrawals, late drop/adds, academic disciplines, student field studies, etc.

  • Clarify curricular issues for students.

  • Compile all materials relevant to the RC Board on Academic Standing for review and implement decisions of the Board, including following up on all student disciplinary actions as needed.

  • Attend BOAS/Advisor Core meetings and provide administrative support as needed

  • Order E&E Evaluations each term and compile evaluation reports for submission to the RC Executive Office.

15% - Residential College Summer Orientation Support

  • In collaboration with the RC Director of Academic Services, coordinate the RCs orientation efforts, including managing orientation modules and email reminders.

  • Work with the Student Affairs Coordinator to recruit, hire, train and supervise RC Peer Advisors during summer orientation.

  • Advise students and assist them in selecting first semester courses during virtual orientation

  • Provide drop-in advising during virtual and in-person orientation dates

  • Attend parent and family orientation sessions as a representative of the RC

  • Manage record-keeping for orientation course overrides in RC First Year Writing Seminars and language courses.

15% - Residential College Curriculum and Classroom Management

  • Coordinate schedule of classes for all RC programs each semester, including scheduling and assignment of all classrooms in East Quadrangle.

  • Schedule all RC classes in a timely fashion in order to ensure faculty have the facilities they need to teach.

  • Work with the Office of the Registrar to troubleshoot problems.

  • Coordinate with other LSA departments for meet-together or cross-listed classes, shared faculty, etc.

  • Enter RC course descriptions into the LSA Course Guide.

  • Attend RC Curriculum Planning Committee meetings and provide administrative support as needed

  • Work with RC faculty on submitting new or revised course proposals, and any changes of RC majors or minors.

  • Work with EQ Housing to complete all non-curricular scheduling of RC classroom space.

10% - RC Academic Services Work Study Student Training and Supervision

  • In collaboration with the RC Student Affairs Coordinator, train and supervise academic services work study students on clerical and administrative tasks, including but not limited to answering phone calls, setting room reservations, assisting with event coordination and set-up, general office upkeep/decoration/maintenance, and other assigned duties as necessary.

5% - General Administrative Support

  • Greet visitors and guests, directing them to appropriate offices as needed.

  • Answer phones, direct calls and take messages as needed.

  • Assist with events and other RC activities as needed.

  • Provide support for the Director of Academic Services.

Required Qualifications *

  • Education: Bachelors degree (or equivalent education and experience) or higher is mandatory.

  • Experience: 3-5 years of progressive experience in Academic Services or a similar administrative area; expertise in curriculum management and academic advising.

  • Skills: Considerable experience in student affairs and academic advising; excellent communication and problem-solving skills; ability to manage multiple complex programs; demonstrated ability to handle crises effectively, solving problems proactively and creatively.

Desired Qualifications *

  • Masters degree in higher education or a related field.

  • Strong knowledge of U-M and LSA policies, procedures, and systems (including MPathways).

  • Enthusiasm and energy for working on behalf of students and their academic and career interests.

  • Proven ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams in a "living-learning" academic environment.

  • Experience providing clear visions for innovation and advancement in advising, curriculum and academic affairs.

Additional Information

The salary range for this position is $47,600 to $59,600, please note a higher salary may be offered to highly qualified candidates.
