Thermal Hydraulics Engineer III-V

Job Description This role is responsible for the engineering design and development of mechanical systems, structures, and components for nuclear products and facilities. Key Responsibilities Develop mechanical/physical concepts and support processes to create or identify structures, systems, and components (SSCs) for use in nuclear products or facilities with a focus on nuclear safety. Identify, collect, and document applicable requirements, interfaces, design basis and criteria by coordinating with key stakeholders and systems engineers, and support identification of industry codes and standards. Plan and perform analyses to assess SSCs ensuring they meet intended functions and technical specifications. Perform hand calculations and analytical tool computations for structural, thermal, hydraulic, and other scoping calculations as directed. Develop, test, and verify CFD models to support design and analysis that form part of reactor licensing basis. Provide heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and particulate mechanics analysis to support design of X-energy reactors and subsystems. Support assessment of SSC manufacturability, assembly and integration considerations. Write and develop design documentation, including design basis documents, technical reports, calculations, and drawings in accordance with applicable procedures. Develop Verification and Validation (V&V) plans for analytical tools and support qualification of toolset. Perform work in accordance with X-energy quality procedures for design and configuration management to meet project quality requirements. Provide independent reviews and acceptance reviews of engineering deliverables and data. Maintain professional demeanor and behavior at all times in all forms of communication. Perform other duties as assigned by the manager. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline (e.g., nuclear, aerospace, chemical) from an accredited institution. Proficiency with engineering hand calculations. Experience and/or knowledge in at least one of the following areas: Use of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis codes such as STAR-CCM+, Fluent, or similar. Experience Levels Level III : Execute core tasks with minimal supervision. Provides ownership over technical scope involving coordination of multiple contributors. Requires typically five years of engineering experience; a Master’s may substitute for two years, a Ph.D. for three years. Level IV : Lead execution of core tasks without close supervision, give guidance to junior team members, and lead small groups of engineers. Requires typically ten years of engineering experience; a Master’s may substitute for two years, a Ph.D. for three years. Level V : Lead execution of core tasks with extensive latitude and mentor junior team members, staying abreast of industry trends. Requires typically fifteen years of engineering experience; a Master’s may substitute for two years, a Ph.D. for three years; prior X-energy experience may substitute for required years. Location 530 Gaither Road, Rockville, MD. Work Schedule Work-site expectations: 4-5 days in office. Travel: up to 10% as needed. Hours: 8:00 am-5:00 pm ET, Monday-Friday.
