Job Description
Ulysses Development Group LLC (the “Company” or “UDG”) is seeking a Property Accountant, Asset Management. UDG is a growing developer and owner-operator of affordable and workforce housing nationwide. The firm is based in Denver, CO.
\n \nThe company is an active developer of affordable housing, using the 4% and 9% Low Income Housing Tax Credit/tax exempt bond programs, although it also plans other low-income housing and workforce housing development activities as well as acquisitions of existing low-income housing properties.
\n \nPOSITION SUMMARY
\nThe Property Accountant, Asset Management will report on a solid-line basis to the Accounting department and on a dotted-line basis to the SVP of Asset Management, primarily serving the Asset Management team while functioning with the technical accounting and systems knowledge of a property accountant. This role is the primary owner-side accounting liaison to UDG's third-party property management companies, responsible for collecting, reviewing, and loading monthly financial packages into UDG's accounting system, ensuring the books are accurate, complete, and audit-ready. Beyond data entry, the position analyzes each package for accuracy and trends, partners with the Asset Management team on any accounting related needs, and works directly with third-party property management accountants to resolve journal entry and coding questions, ensuring owner-level entries are properly reflected at the property level.
\n \nJOB DESCRIPTION
\nThird-Party Financial Package Review & System Integrity (Primary Responsibility)
\n• Collect monthly financial reporting packages (financial statements, general ledger detail, bank reconciliations, rent rolls, and supporting schedules) from third-party property management companies for each property owned by UDG.
\n• Review each package for completeness, accuracy, and compliance with UDG accounting policies before loading into UDG's owner-level accounting system.
\n• Input and reconcile third-party financial data into UDG's system of record, ensuring the general ledger reflects an accurate and complete picture of each property's financial position.
\n• Identify discrepancies, missing information, or unusual entries in property manager packages and follow up directly with the property management accounting teams to resolve them timely.
\n• Maintain document retention and workpapers supporting each month's close to ensure a clean, audit-ready trail.
\nVariance Analysis & Asset Management Support
\n• Assisting AM in preparing monthly financial results against budget, prior year, and forecast, and assisting in identifying and summarizing key variances by property.
\n• Partner with the Asset Management team to prepare and respond to variance analysis questions by providing the underlying accounting detail or reporting, if applicable, needed to explain performance.
\n• Support Asset Management in preparing monthly, quarterly, and annual portfolio reporting packages for ownership, investors, and lenders.
\n• Serve as support to Asset Management with cash flow monitoring and waterfall distribution calculations.
\nJournal Entry Guidance & Owner-Level Coordination
\n• Serve as a technical accounting resource to third-party property management accountants, advising on proper journal entry coding, chart of accounts mapping, and GAAP treatment consistent with UDG policy.
\n• Prepare and record owner-level (above-property) journal entries, including intercompany transactions, management fee true-ups, and other adjustments, and ensure these entries are communicated and, where necessary, pushed down to the property management accountants for recording at the property level.
\n• Confirm that owner adjustments are correctly reflected in subsequent property manager reporting packages, closing the loop between UDG's books and the property-level books.
\n• Maintain a consistent chart of accounts and reporting structure across the portfolio, working with property managers to correct miscoded transactions.
\nBooks & Records Integrity
\n• Perform monthly balance sheet reconciliations for assigned properties, ensuring cash, escrow, reserve, and intercompany balances tie out between UDG's system and property manager records.
\n• Monitor bank reconciliations, aged receivables/payables, and other balance sheet items provided by property managers for reasonableness and completeness.
\n• Support internal and external audits, tax return preparation, and lender/investor reporting requests with accurate, well-documented financial data.
\n• Continuously identify opportunities to improve the accuracy, timeliness, and efficiency of the property manager reporting and close process.
\nCross-Functional Collaboration
\n• Act as the primary point of contact between Accounting and Asset Management for all third-party managed property financial matters.
\n• Build and maintain strong working relationships with third-party property management accounting teams to facilitate timely, accurate reporting.
\n• Collaborate with Accounting, Asset Management, and other internal departments on special projects, system implementations, and process improvements as needed.
\n• Ensuring all intercompany payments are promptly invoiced and settled on a monthly basis.
\nTeam Contribution
\n• While the primary focus of this role is owner-level property accounting and asset management support, the Property Accountant is expected to operate as a flexible, collaborative team member,
\nsupporting colleagues and department leadership with additional requests, special projects, or overflow work as capacity and qualifications allow.
\n \nQUALIFICATIONS
\n• Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university, with a major in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
\n• Minimum of three years of accounting experience, with real estate, property management, or fund/portfolio accounting experience strongly preferred; affordable housing (LIHTC) experience a plus.
\n• Working knowledge of GAAP and general ledger accounting; experience reviewing or consolidating third-party financial statements preferred.
\n• Proficiency in Excel required; experience with property management or real estate accounting systems (e.g., Yardi, MRI, or similar) preferred.
\n• Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret financial statements, identify variances, and communicate findings clearly to non-accounting stakeholders.
\n• Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage a portfolio of properties and competing deadlines.
\n• Strong interpersonal and written communication skills, with the confidence to work directly with external property management accounting teams.
\n• Demonstrated ability to take initiative, exercise sound judgment, and work both independently and collaboratively across departments.
\n \nCOMPENSATION
\nThe salary range for this position is $85,000 to $105,000 annually, commensurate with experience. In addition to the base salary, the successful candidate may be eligible for a performance-based bonus of up to 10%, determined based on individual and company performance.
\n \nBENEFITS
\n• Health, dental, and vision insurance
\n• 401(k) plan with company match
\n• Paid time off (PTO) and holidays
\n• Professional development opportunities
\n• Transportation/parking allowance
\nNote: this role does not include deal/carry participation.
\n \nPHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
\n• Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer
\n• Frequent near-vision use for reading and working with detailed information on computer screens
\n• Occasional standing, walking, and moving about the office
\n• May require lifting and moving objects weighing up to 15 pounds
\n• Ability to communicate verbally and in writing with colleagues
\n• Work is primarily performed in a climate-controlled office environment
\n• Exposure to moderate noise levels typical of an office setting (e.g., printers, telephones, ambient noise)
\n \nThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the functions.
