Join Our Team We are currently accepting applications for the positions of Permit Technician in the Building and Safety Division of the Community Development Department. Under general supervision responds to all requests regarding land development and construction on private and public property, including accepting, processing and issuing permit applications and plans, and maintains development and land use records. The ideal candidate will possess strong oral and written communication skills; be customer service oriented; possess excellent researching skills; and have experience with the latest industry software. Essential Duties

Provide general and semi-technical information to the public, property owners, developers, and other agencies regarding property development and property maintenance matters, including reviewing plans and sketches against standard drawings; Coordinate the processing and issuance of all permits, plans, and certificates of occupancy, from the initial application phase, through obtaining approvals from other divisions, to the final inspection approval and the microfilming of all documents; Assist with the completion of various forms and applications and review related documents, such as proof of ownership and deeds; Act as a liaison between developers and owners, and inspectors and contractors, including environmental agencies; Coordinate final inspection clearance from all departments and determine that all fees have been paid prior to permit issuance and/or occupancy and utility releases; Perform general clerical duties, including data input, filing and routine correspondence; Maintain accurate data, including numerical control, continuous permit inventory, and statistical data for various monthly and annual reports; Compute fees and deposits for City development projects; Maintain supplies, including permit applications, forms, hand-out materials and related documents; requisition necessary supplies; Assess the use and necessity of various forms and applications, and make recommendations for necessary changes; Issue street addresses and maintain related records; May be required to work overtime and weekends; Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Graduation from an accredited high school or successful completion of the G.E.D. (General Educational Development) exam AND two (2) years of experience dealing directly with the public. Experience in building construction or engineering is highly desirable. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Possession of at least one (1) International Code Council (ICC) certification is required at time of application. Possession of an International Code Council (ICC) Permit Technician certification is highly desirable. California Class "C" driver's license is highly desirable.

KNOWLEDGE OF: Modern office methods, practices, and equipment; business report and correspondence formats; the principles and implementation of building and planning codes and ordinances; state laws related to permits and contractor licensing; standard office practices and procedures including business correspondence, filing and standard office equipment operation; basic principles and methods of public administration, research and statistics; and effective customer service techniques and principles.

ABILITY TO: Work effectively, tactfully and courteously with the public, City staff, private developers and elected officials; think and act quickly within a complex work environment to analyze situations and make decisions regarding procedural matters without immediate supervision; understand and carry out complex technical directions; interpret codes, regulations, and fee schedules; make basic arithmetical calculations with speed and accuracy; prepare and maintain accurate and complete records and reports; operate standard office equipment, including personal computers using database management software and MS Word; and commit to providing quality customer service.
