Position Summary

The Controller leads DS&L's accounting function and provides reliable financial information for operational decision-making, cash management, project profitability, compliance, and planning. This role manages the accounting department, maintains accurate and timely books, oversees recurring close and reconciliation processes, and partners with leadership to identify risks and improvement opportunities.

Maintain GAAP compliance and follow proper cost-accounting procedures for industry-specific standards.

Maintain WIP schedules, monitor project gross margins, and alert teams when results require attention.

Prepare and maintain the cash flow forecast; analyze concerns and present them to the board.

Update KPI data before KPI meetings.

Prepare and/or review check runs in consideration of the cash flow forecast.

Prepare and/or approve payroll.

Analyze capitalization of fixed assets above the $2,500 threshold.

Attend accounting meetings with the BizGro team and maintain Monday board task lists.

Analyze accounting data and recommend improvements.

Complete bank, credit card, and general ledger reconciliations, particularly payable accounts.

Reconcile vendor statements directly or through AP oversight.

Reconcile customer accounts directly or through AR oversight.

Prepare and submit sales tax filings and payments.

Close the accounting books.

Maintain insurance coverage lapse schedules.

Track inventory and maintain accurate inventory accounting.

Complete the quarterly book close in accordance with Goldstein requests.

Manage external audit data requests, typically insurance-related.

Prepare annual 1099s.

Prepare the budget one week before the Planning Session.

Support new-hire onboarding and HR management of internal teams.

Update the budget when revenue projections change.

Ensure new-vendor procedures are followed, including COI and W-9 collection.

Maintain appropriate documentation for 1099 vendors.

Required Skills

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Strong organization and time-management skills
• Strong technology application background
• Proficiency with accounting software and related financial tools

Preferred Skills

• Payroll processing
• At least five years of accounting experience
• At least two to three years in a senior accounting role
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment
• Analytical, problem-solving, and attention-to-detail skills

Preferred Qualifications

• Senior accounting experience in a relevant industry
• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
• CPA or CMA certification

• Books close accurately and on schedule.
• Leadership receives timely visibility into cash, project gross margins, KPIs, and emerging risks.
• Accounting, AP, AR, payroll, vendor documentation, and compliance processes are consistently followed.
• Analysis improves cash discipline, profitability, and operating decisions.
