Description Job Title: Registered Nurse (RN) - Nuclear Cardiology & Computed Tomography Position Summary The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to patients undergoing diagnostic procedures within Nuclear Cardiology and Computed Tomography (CT) services. The RN serves as a clinical resource for patient assessment, intravenous access, contrast administration support, stress testing, emergency response, patient education, and procedural monitoring in a high-volume outpatient cardiology environment. The RN performs all clinical duties in accordance with the New York State Nurse Practice Act, organizational policies, approved protocols, and provider orders. The RN collaborates with cardiologists, advanced practice providers, nuclear medicine technologists, CT technologists, medical assistants and ancillary staff to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care while maintaining compliance with New York State regulations, professional nursing standards, accreditation requirements, and organizational policies. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Patient Assessment and Care Perform comprehensive nursing assessments prior to nuclear medicine and CT procedures. Obtain and document relevant medical history, medication profiles, allergies, renal risk factors, and prior contrast reactions. Evaluate patient readiness for imaging procedures and identify contraindications requiring provider consultation. Assess vital signs and monitor patients throughout procedures as clinically indicated. Provide patient education regarding examinations, medications, contrast agents, radiation safety considerations, preparation requirements, and post-procedure instructions. Serve as a patient advocate while promoting patient‑centered care and safety. Nuclear Cardiology Services Assess patients scheduled for myocardial perfusion imaging and other nuclear cardiology procedures. Start intravenous access for procedures. Participate in rapid response events and cardiac arrest situations in accordance with organizational emergency protocols. Provide post‑procedure follow‑up for patients experiencing adverse reactions and communicate findings to the appropriate provider as indicated. Prepare and monitor patients undergoing exercise and pharmacologic stress testing. Administer medications under provider order and approved protocols within RN scope of practice and organizational policies. within RN scope of practice and organizational policies. Monitor electrocardiographic rhythms, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, symptoms, and hemodynamic status during stress testing. Recognize and intervene appropriately in response to adverse reactions, arrhythmias, ischemic symptoms, or other emergent clinical conditions. Coordinate care with supervising physicians and APPs during stress testing procedures. Computed Tomography Services Conduct pre‑contrast screening and patient assessment. Hydration protocols (pre and/or post contrast) Review renal function laboratory results and other relevant clinical information according to established protocols. Establish peripheral intravenous access as needed. Administer medications prescribed for cardiac CT protocols in accordance with physician orders and nursing scope of practice. Assist with patient preparation for cardiac CT angiography and other CT examinations. Monitor patients before, during, and after contrast administration as clinically appropriate. Recognize and respond to contrast media reactions and related complications. Duties may be modified and this list is not all‑inclusive. Emergency Preparedness Respond immediately to medical emergencies occurring within imaging services. Initiate emergency interventions consistent with ACLS and organizational protocols. Maintain competency in recognition and management of: Contrast media reactions Allergic and anaphylactic responses Cardiac arrhythmias Vasovagal reactions Acute coronary syndromes Respiratory distress Participate in emergency drills and quality improvement activities. Care Coordination and Documentation Document assessments, interventions, patient education, medication administration, and patient outcomes accurately and timely within the electronic medical record. Communicate significant clinical findings to physicians and advanced practice providers. Regulatory Compliance and Quality Maintain compliance with: New York State Nursing Practice requirements HIPAA regulations OSHA standards American Heart Association standards Accreditation requirements (ACR, IAC, Joint Commission and/or applicable accrediting bodies) Practice policies and procedures Participate in quality assurance, quality improvement, and safety initiatives. Assist in maintaining emergency equipment, crash carts, contrast reaction supplies, and medication inventories. Participate in departmental education and competency programs. Associate Degree in Nursing required. Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred. Licensure Current unrestricted New York State Registered Nurse License. Certifications Required: Basic Life Support (BLS) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Preferred: Certified Radiology Nurse (CRN) Cardiac-Vascular Nursing Certification Ambulatory Care Nursing Certification Experience Required: Minimum three (3) years clinical nursing experience. Preferred: Cardiology nursing experience. Radiology, CT, or nuclear medicine experience. Experience performing or monitoring cardiac stress testing. Outpatient ambulatory practice experience. Experience in high-volume procedural environments. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Strong knowledge of cardiovascular disease processes. Knowledge of contrast media administration and adverse reaction management. Knowledge of pharmacologic stress agents and cardiac monitoring. Ability to interpret cardiac rhythms and recognize emergent conditions. Proficiency in peripheral IV insertion. Strong organizational and multitasking skills. Effective communication and patient education skills. Ability to function independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. Competency using electronic medical records and healthcare technology. Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods. Ability to lift and move up to 25 pounds. Ability to assist patients during transfers and emergency situations. Visual and auditory acuity sufficient for patient assessment and monitoring. Working Conditions Fast‑paced, high‑volume outpatient cardiology environment. Frequent exposure to patients with complex cardiovascular conditions. Occasional exposure to bloodborne pathogens and hazardous materials. Exposure to ionizing radiation within established safety limits. Participation in emergency response activities as required. Preferred Performance Expectations Demonstrates excellence in patient satisfaction and patient safety. Supports efficient patient throughput while maintaining quality standards. Maintains 100% compliance with annual competencies, mandatory education, and credentialing requirements. Promotes teamwork and professional collaboration across Cardiology, Nuclear Medicine, and CT services.
