TRIO-Student Success Specialist/Program Specialist 3 (Project)

This employee is responsible for repairing and maintaining light and/or heavy vehicular equipment such as fire trucks, refuse trucks, dump trucks, school buses, trailers, construction equipment and other motorized County equipment. Duties include: inspecting equipment; performing corrective and preventive maintenance; troubleshooting and diagnosing repair work on mechanical, hydraulic, air conditioning and electrical systems; determining scope and sequence of repairs required; providing repair feasibility recommendations on transmissions or related components; training new mechanics; assigning and reviewing work during the absence of the supervisor; performing Virginia State Safety Inspections on vehicles and performing related duties as required. This position reports to the Trades Operations Supervisor. Online application is required. Minimum (Full Performance Level) High school diploma or equivalent plus three years of journey level auto mechanic experience performing preventive maintenance duties that include state and emission inspection and servicing; and one or more of the following functions: diagnosing, repairing and rebuilding gasoline or diesel engines, brake systems, manual and automatic transmissions, and differentials. Trainee High school diploma or equivalent plus 18 months of the required experience. Substitution Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the education requirement on a year for year basis. Desirable Preference may be given to candidates with one or more of the following: experience performing computerized diagnostic testing to troubleshoot complex engine, mechanical, or electrical problems experience repairing diesel engines (Cummins, Caterpillar, Detroit or International) experience repairing transmissions (Allison, Fuller, or Eaton) experience repairing hydraulic systems (Commercial, Vicker, or Tyrone) National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications experience training other mechanics Additional Requirements Applicant must possess or obtain within ninety days of appointment, a category Class "A" or "B" commercial driver's license from the applicant's place of residence. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Prior to the time of appointment, the successful applicant must pass a pre-employment drug screening. The successful applicant will be subject to drug screening at such times during employment as required by federal, state and local standards and policies. Any offer of employment will be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record and passing a pre-employment drug screening and alcohol breath test as required by applicable standards. Applicant must possess or obtain a VA State Safety Inspection Permit during the first nine months of employment. Must provide and be willing to maintain hand tools required by the trade. Ability to work in awkward or cramped positions for long periods of time. Ability to lift heavy objects weighing 50 pounds or less unassisted. Note Anyone hired without the VA State Safety Inspection Permit or the commercial driver's license will be appointed as a Trainee and must obtain the permit/license within the stipulated time frame. If a trainee is hired, depending on qualifications, a training period will be established to last no longer than the equivalent of one year. At the end of the training period, the employee must meet experience, training and proficiency requirements for the journey level position. Once the candidate qualifies, the one-year probationary period will begin. Salary The salary scale at the Trainee level is from $15.35 per hour (normal entrance) to $25.37 per hour (maximum). Hours Tuesday through Thursday, 3:00 p.m. to 11:30 p.m.; Friday, 1:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.; and Saturday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Hours may be subject to change. Seasonal overtime may be required.
