Transportation Manager

Position Summary Responsible for managing the transportation functions—supervising drivers, dispatching, routing, and planning—including for‑hire cartage and backhauls—to ensure safe, timely, and accurate delivery of groceries and household goods. Location 2330 Roosevelt Ave, San Antonio, TX 78210 Responsibilities Manage transportation operations, including supervision of drivers, dispatching, routing, and planning of for‑hire cartage and backhauls. Coordinate activities with warehouse distribution, maintenance, customer service, and other cross‑functional departments. Plan and schedule deliveries and backhauls to maximize resource utilization and reduce mileage. Negotiate rates for third‑party services and contract drivers as needed. Ensure compliance with DOT/CSA, OSHA and all relevant regulatory agencies. Oversee equipment maintenance, availability, and preventive/ corrective inspections. Develop, maintain, and report on transportation metrics (cost per mile, operating ratio, driver/truck utilization, delivery performance). Maintain and reinforce safety programs, investigate incidents, and document accidents or injuries. Develop and update policies, procedures, and processes to improve efficiency and regulatory compliance. Manage the transportation P&L, including cost controls, revenue and productivity objectives. Identify opportunities for cost savings, efficiencies, and continuous improvement. Build and maintain relationships with warehouse management, carriers, and customers, addressing scheduling or transportation issues. Participate in labor relations negotiations, union contract administration, and grievance or arbitration procedures. Oversee department staffing, training, performance management, and career development. Stay current on legal regulations, industry trends, and best practices to make recommendations for program improvement. Perform additional duties as assigned. Qualifications Associate degree in Logistics, Transportation, Supply Chain Management, or related field (or bachelor’s degree) or equivalent combination of education and experience. Five years of experience in transportation planning, logistics, or dispatch. Availability for a flexible schedule and on‑call coverage during evenings and weekends. Experience with transportation operations systems and deep knowledge of DOT/CSA, OSHA and related regulatory requirements. Two years of supervisory or management experience. Strong knowledge of dispatch, routing, backhauls, contract carriers, Bill of Lading, Manifest, and related logistics processes. Proficiency with transportation onboarding software; experience with Cadec or Omnitracs preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong organizational, prioritization, and multi‑tasking abilities. Leadership capability and ability to work in a hands‑on environment. Strong analytical, decision‑making, problem‑solving, and business‑acumen skills. Ability to collaborate across business units, vendors, and third‑party services in a time‑sensitive setting. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Willingness to travel up to 15% as necessary. Physical ability to sit, walk, stand, lift up to 75 pounds with assistance, and perform repetitive movements. Availability to work weekends, holidays, nights, and overtime; shift length typically 8‑10 hours. Travel requirements may vary depending on assignment.
