Position Overview The Nurse Technician/Secretary performs patient care activities and related non‑professional services necessary for the personal needs, safety, and comfort of patients while maintaining a safe and clean environment under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. This cross‑trained role may also function as a Secretary I to facilitate unit functions and to support department secretarial tasks. Duties and Responsibilities Provide patient care, including accurate observations of patient needs, reporting patient symptoms and needs to the Licensed Nurse. Maintain high involvement with patients and family members. Maintain proper body alignment at all times. Assist in general routine patient care based on the Registered Nurse’s assessment and plan of care, adhering to accepted policies and procedures. Perform basic patient care tasks such as hygiene, bed-making, oral care, peri‑care, hair care, elimination assistance, feeding, and when necessary feed patients. Assist with patient movement including range of motion, turning patients every two hours, positioning them in bed, and assisting to chairs when applicable. Transport patients by gurney, bed, or wheelchair. Remove and apply restraints. Replace telemetry batteries and patches as requested. Prevent skin breakdown. Take vital signs, including pain level. Maintain accurate intake and output records. Participate in hourly rounding to assess patient needs and safety. Assist in maintaining a quiet environment. Perform elimination procedures such as Foley care, colostomy care, urostomy care, and appliance emptying and changing. Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation and electrocardiograms as requested. Assist ambulation with assistive devices such as crutches, walkers, or gait belts. Manage tubes and drains, including Jackson Pratt, Hemovac, and Pleurovac. Use equipment such as intermittent compression devices, traction, scales, and cast care. Conduct surgical skin preparation. Run errands to facilitate workflow, e.g., take specimens to lab. Operate technical equipment safely and appropriately. Demonstrate knowledge of special needs and behaviors of age‑specific groups. Document accurately in the electronic medical record, restraint record, and belongings list. Understand legal aspects of care and relevant legal documents for the unit/area of care. Maintain computer system proficiency. Provide normal clerical support such as copying, scanning, typing, filing, faxing, and ordering department supplies. Assemble and maintain medical records per hospital/unit practice. Process patient paperwork and prioritize according to highest need. Transcribe physician orders accurately and efficiently. Answer telephones courteously and direct calls appropriately. Assist in the maintenance of a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients. Assist with unit support record keeping, department reports, statistical sheets, and meeting minutes. Maintain department‑specific certifications and inventories. Order requisitions for a variety of hospital services. Answer call lights and thin charts as needed. Copy charts for transfers and round for discharges; assess empty bed status. Coordinate information for team leaders and charge nurses as required. Assist in special projects or assignments as needed. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of basic nurse technician skills and basic medical terminology. Clear and concise communication skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, clinicians, and other health team professionals. Ability to accept responsibility for accuracy and timely response to emergent and non‑emergent requests. Minimum one (1) year experience in an acute care setting preferred. Minimum one (1) year secretarial experience preferred. Minimum one (1) year experience as a nurse technician preferred. Licensure and Certifications Current certification in American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Providers. Current California License as a CNA preferred. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Work is often performed under demanding, emotional, and physical conditions. Accepts additional workload during times of unexpected circumstances (e.g., high activity, high census, and sudden emergencies).
