GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Medical Lab Technician collects, processes, and analyzes blood specimens to help diagnose and treat diseases.  Responsibilities include operating lab equipment, performing tests, recording and logging data into patient records, and ensuring lab quality control and safety procedures are followed.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Specimen handling:  Collect, label, and prepare blood specimens for testing.
• Performing tests:  Conduct a variety of diagnostic tests on specimens using specialized equipment.
• Equipment operation and maintenance:  Operate, calibrate, and maintain lab instruments, such as automated analyzers.
• Data and record management:  Record and report test results, oversee transmission of data into patient medical records, and use laboratory information systems.
• Quality control and safety:  Ensure accurate results by following quality control procedures and lab protocols, as designated by the Technical Consultant, while adhering to safety and infection control protocols.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

Strong attention to detail and accuracy.  Familiarity with laboratory equipment and technology.  Ability to prioritize tasks and recognize failures.  Knowledge of laboratory safety and biohazard procedures.  Effective communication skills.

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS:  EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s Degree and/or Associates Degree in a Science Discipline preferred. High School Diploma or equivalent.  Prior experience in testing in a clinical laboratory.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Dedicated laboratory space in a physician office setting.  Occasional possibility of safety risks.  Meeting requested reasonable deadlines.  Tasks that require focus and concentration.
