In a medical-surgical unit, the CNA delivers direct patient care, assists with ADLs, and supports nurses in daily rounds and routine care for adults with a broad range of medical conditions. The core purpose is to contribute to safe, efficient, and compassionate in-patient care while ensuring accurate documentation and patient comfort.

Responsibilities

• Assist with ADLs, positioning, mobility, and personal hygiene for medical-surgical patients.
• Support vital signs monitoring and reporting of patient changes to the care team.
• Assist with patient transport, sample collection, and specimen handling under supervision.
• Maintain safety, infection control, and equipment readiness in the unit.
• Document care provided and communicate with the nursing team during rounds.
• Educate patients and families on care plans and discharge instructions.
• Collaborate with interdisciplinary team to support care delivery.

Qualifications

Education: High school diploma or equivalent; completion of a state-approved CNA program.

Licensure: Current CNA certification in the state of practice.

Certifications:

• CPR/BLS certification
• First Aid certification

Experience or Skills: Previous CNA experience in med-surg units or hospital settings; ability to work in a fast-paced environment and document care accurately.

Experience

• Experience in hospital med-surg or acute care units
• Experience documenting care in electronic health records

Preferred

• Experience with post-operative care or chronic disease management

Work Environment

Medical-surgical unit with a mix of medical conditions and patient acuity. Shifts may include days, evenings, nights, and weekends; documentation is completed in the hospital information system. Team-based environment emphasizing patient safety, education, and collaboration with nurses and physicians.
