PRN Inpatient / Acute Care Hospital Speech Therapist (SLP) - WVU Medicine East (BMC/JMC)

Evaluates and treats patients requiring speech-language-swallowing therapy. Minimum Qualifications Current or temporary Speech‑Language Pathologist licensure in the state where services will be provided. Current ASHA Certificate of Clinical Competency in Speech Language Pathology, or must be obtained within 48 months of hire. Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date. Core Duties and Responsibilities Provides coordinated and comprehensive patient care including assessment, expected outcomes, rehabilitation interventions, and evaluation with an interdisciplinary team approach. Evaluates speech, language, swallowing, and cognitive‑linguistic needs and develops and implements treatment programs for assigned patients; determines/revises priorities for direct/indirect patient care activities based on patient need and available resources; documents all treatments according to department policies and procedures. Performs evaluation of patient response to tasks performed and delegated. Participates in the Performance Improvement program of the Rehabilitation Services department with emphasis on speech therapy to assure delivery of appropriate, timely, and cost‑effective services. May supervise assigned graduate assistants/interns, students, and volunteers; assigns schedules for student participation in evaluation and treatment in the clinical setting; approves lesson plans, reports, documentation; provides feedback and written evaluations at semester end. For facilities with specialty accreditation requirements: Complete annual required education related to specialty accreditation as defined by accreditation standards; training may be completed through CBLs, trainings, in‑services, and competency validation. Physical Requirements Minimize manual lifting of patients and limit safe patient handling to 35 pounds; transfers, lifts, re‑positioning completed using equipment and patient handling aids per policy. Heavy/Hard work: requires strength and/or stamina to lift, move, stoop, reach, stand, walk, and carry materials and equipment weighing 40+ lbs. Specific vision abilities: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Working Environment Exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, and various cleaning and laundry chemicals. Skills and Abilities Ability to organize and prioritize time and tasks to achieve well‑coordinated work efforts and effectively meet schedules, integrating multiple factors impacting patient care.
