Position Purpose:
Manage the safe and efficient production of coal on the working section of an underground coal mine.

1. Direct supervision of employees on working section related to safety and production.  
2. Identify and supervise the elimination of hazardous conditions derived from roof conditions, dust, gas, and those related to material handling, movement of equipment and electrical power distribution. 
3. Supervise the installation and maintenance of roof supports, ventilation controls, pumps, section supplies, electrical power distribution centers, conveyor belts, feeders, fire prevention equipment, and fire fighting apparatus.  
4. Supervise the mining of coal according to plans on main entry and room sections using continuous mining equipment and transporting this coal to section loading point while following all laws and/or Company regulations.  
5. Direct the section according to mine map projections making sure sights are correct and cross-cuts are turned properly.  
6. Conduct pre-shift and on-shift examinations including review of examiner's book, equipment conditions, section conditions, roof and roadway conditions.  

Other Duties/Responsibilities

1. Supervise the clean-up and recovery operations should roof falls or other conditions interfere with normal production.
2. Conduct regular scheduled safety meetings with crew.
3. Complete all paper work for the section including the fireboss books and maintenance information.
4. Maintain a professional working atmosphere by following the Wage Agreement and following sound employee relations procedures.
5. Maintain all standard operating procedures, including all mining activities (housekeeping, etc.). 
6. Other duties as assigned. 

Position Qualifications

1. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
   1. Through knowledge of underground mining practices, equipment and procedures, State and Federal mine laws, as well as company policy.
   2. Knowledge and ability to make decisions relative to production, maintenance, law, safety, and contractural problems.
   3. Organizational and communication skills.
   4. Ability to supervise and motivate employees.
2. Education and/or Training:
   1. State Mine Foreman/Fireboss certification.
   2. Minimum of three years underground experience.
   3. Emergency Medical Technician for mining preferred.

4. Self rescuer

Physical Abilities:

1. Must be able to lift 21-50 pounds occasionally, frequently up to 25 pounds, up to 10 pounds constantly
