SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Superintendent, the High School Principal provides leadership for the instructional
program, as well as coordinating the implementation, review, and revision of the curriculum at the building level. Manages the operation and all functions of the school. Supervises school staff regarding instruction, curriculum, student programs and issues, and building operations. Schedules and attends meetings, as appropriate. Leads the school improvement process. QUALIFICATIONS/ATTRIBUTES:
• Possess and maintain a valid Michigan teacher certificate with at least five (5) years of successful teaching experience
• Possess and maintain a valid Michigan administrative certificate with at least three (3) years of successful leadership experience at a large comprehensive high school
• Master's degree or higher, preferred, in school administration or educational leadership
• Demonstrated ability to foster positive relationships with students, parents, and staff
• Demonstrated ability to lead and grow others
• Demonstrated highly effective communication skills ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The district seeks a highly qualified and motivated transformational leader who can:
1. Provide for the selection, supervision, and evaluation of all staff members, as well as various procedures:
a. Supervises and evaluates certified secondary staff, ensuring that the proper elements of instruction are implemented; coordinates the teacher supervision and evaluation processes with the assistant principals.
b. Evaluates assistant principals and the athletic coordinator
c. Supervises secretarial, paraprofessional, and custodial staff (in conjunction with other members of the Administrative Team) in the performance of their duties.
d. Manages staff and school improvement processes, as well as teacher Professional Development Plans.
e. Screens, interviews, and recommends the selection of staff, including teachers, paraprofessionals, and other support staff
f. Assures the existence of a faculty participating decision-making process through the department chair structure
2. Manage the daily operations of the building:
a. Interprets policies related to faculty, staff, and students.
b. Responds to and resolves complaints and grievances of students, staff, and parents.
c. In the absence of the assistant principal, disciplines students.
d. Develops building objectives and procedures to facilitate the delivery of programs, student discipline, scheduling, and recordkeeping.
e. Coordinates various District programs with the regular education program.
f. Supervises athletic events, evening school functions, and attends school-related community events.
g. Manages field trips, out-of-state trips, and related transportation requests.
h. Manages school safety and security processes including crisis management procedures.
3. Plans, conducts, and attends meetings, events, and provides for public relations:
a. Plans, conducts, and attends meetings with teachers, other District staff and the community.
b. Takes steps to ensure excellent public relations, including the parent newsletter, building and teacher websites, the school paper, and the yearbook.
c. Manages all advisory groups, including teacher, staff, parent, and student groups.
d. Along with assistant principals, plans and implements recognition events such as academic award banquet, recognition assembly and graduation ceremony.
4. Develops and implements a plan for the continuous evaluation of the curriculum and programs:
a. Collaborates with other District administrators in assessing and recommending District programs and policies.
b. Coordinates the total curriculum with all departments.
c. Leads high standard implementation process, including curriculum development, standards assessment, recordkeeping, and reporting.
d. Assures and implements building site-based decision-making processes.
e. Organizes and manages school improvement processes.
f. Manages, analyzes, and interprets data, including assessment results, for school improvement purposes.
Willingness to set high standards for conduct and academic achievement, and then take the steps necessary to move both staff and students in that direction
5. Plans and recommends budget, subject to approval
a. Manages the total building budget
b. Manages the building activity accounts
c. Recommend the ordering of supplies, textbooks, equipment, and all materials necessary to the operation of the school, within the limits of the budget
6. Ability to lead by example, motivate, and guide professional staff in achieving high standards for themselves and their students
a. Genuine interest in students and regular visibility both during and after the school day
b. Capacity as a self-learner who reaches out to available professional resources and other educators to seek solutions and assistance with implementation
c. Evidence of knowledge of current research in the education of high school students including curriculum, program design, and instructional/cultural/organizational leadership
d. Evidence of knowledge of the entire instructional process including lesson design, implementation, evaluation, and modification SKILLS/ABILITIES:
1. Evidence of superior interpersonal skills including written and oral communication and a mature, professional manner and deportment
2. Evidence of knowledge of critical dimensions of successful collaboration and conflict resolution with all other members of the school community including colleagues, students, and parents
3. Evidence of discipline philosophy and past practice that encourages individual student responsibility to/for self and to the school as a whole
4. Works collaboratively as a member of the high school leadership team to meet and exceed high school and District goals for maximization of student success and student growth goals
5. Creates and maintains a safe environment for all students and staff
6. Maintains high standards of student conduct
7. Works cooperatively with other administrators in the areas of pupil accounting, facility use, staff assignments, financial resource and budget development, and coordination of schedules
8. Ensures compliance with Board of Education administrative guidelines and policies by administrators, students, and staff
9. Attends and participates in Board of Education meetings and committee meetings as required to support the work of the high school, district, and community
10. Continuously informs the Deputy Superintendent and Superintendent the conditions of the school and its activities
11. Performs such other duties as assigned by the Superintendent OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:

3. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community
