Job Summary

The Membership Services Intern will assist the Membership Services Department with non-clinical administrative and customer service activities that support patient enrollment, community outreach, and member engagement efforts. Student interns will help welcome patients, organize enrollment materials, support outreach activities, assist with administrative projects, and observe healthcare access and enrollment processes.

Membership Services Interns will gain exposure to healthcare administration, customer service, patient access services, community health outreach, and health insurance enrollment while exploring careers within the healthcare industry.

Program Overview

The Watts Healthcare Center Summer Internship Program provides high school students with hands-on career exploration opportunities within a professional healthcare environment. Interns will work alongside experienced healthcare professionals while learning workplace expectations, communication skills, and industry-specific practices.

This position is designed to connect students to Career Technical Education (CTE) pathways while developing skills in customer service, healthcare administration, community engagement, communication, organization, and professional workplace readiness.

Key Responsibilities

Membership & Enrollment Support

• Assist staff with organizing membership and enrollment materials.
• Help prepare informational packets and resource materials for patients.
• Support administrative tasks related to enrollment and member services.
• Observe patient registration and healthcare access processes.

Customer Service & Patient Engagement

• Welcome patients and visitors in a professional and friendly manner.
• Assist with directing patients to appropriate departments and services.
• Provide general information regarding available programs and resources.
• Support positive patient experiences through excellent customer service.

Community Outreach Support

• Assist with organizing outreach materials for community events.
• Help prepare educational resources and promotional materials.
• Support staff with community engagement activities and awareness campaigns.
• Learn about programs designed to improve community health outcomes.

Administrative & Clerical Support

• Assist with filing, scanning, and organizing documents.
• Support data entry and administrative projects.
• Help maintain organized records and resource inventories.
• Assist with preparing materials for meetings and presentations.

Career Exploration & Professional Development

• Participate in workplace learning experiences and career readiness activities.
• Learn about educational pathways leading to healthcare administration and public service careers.
• Observe professionals working in patient services and community health settings.
• Develop communication, teamwork, leadership, and problem-solving skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Currently enrolled in Compton Unified School District.
• Preferred Junior or Senior standing.
• Preferred CTE pathway student or rising CTE pathway student.
• Interest in healthcare, science, biotechnology, or public health careers.
• Demonstrates responsibility, professionalism, and dependability.
• Strong communication and organizational skills.
• Positive attitude and willingness to learn.
• Ability to work collaboratively with staff and peers.

Prior to internship start date, selected students will need to demonstrate:

• CPR Certification
• Current TB Clearance (within the last 6 months):
• TB Skin Test (PPD), or
• TB QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFT) blood test
• Chest X-ray (required only for students with a history of a positive PPD or QuantiFERON-TB Gold test; must be completed within the last year)
• Immune Titers:
• Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) IgG
• Varicella (Chickenpox) IgG
• Hepatitis B Surface Antibody
• Immunization Records:
• Tdap
• COVID-19 vaccination (until further notice)
• Current seasonal influenza (flu) vaccination

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

Student interns will work within designated administrative, reception, and membership services areas of Watts Healthcare Center. Interns may spend time assisting with office operations, outreach preparation, patient engagement activities, and administrative support projects. Duties may include standing, walking, organizing materials, operating basic office equipment, and interacting with patients, families, and staff. All interns will work under the supervision of Membership Services personnel and must adhere to workplace safety, confidentiality, and professional conduct standards.
