Farm to People is an online farmers market grocery delivery service specializing in sustainably-sourced, local, fresh produce and artisanally produced foods. Our customers can subscribe to a series of curated Farm Boxes or choose to shop à la carte. We deliver 6 days per week and are expanding in the NYC market. Our mission is to provide an ethical marketplace where people can know where their food is coming from. 

Role Objective

Work Location: Brooklyn, NY

Working Conditions: This is an on-site position.

Schedule: This is a full time position.

Compensation: $21 - 25 / hr

Reporting Structure: This position reports to the Kitchen Operations Manager

Years experience required: At least 4 years experience in a professional kitchen

We’re seeking a detail-oriented, energetic Lead Prep Cook to join our team. The ideal candidate thrives in fast-paced environments, enjoys directing a small team toward completing a goal, and is a motivated self-starter with exceptional communication and organizational skills. They know how to navigate a team of diverse personalities, ensuring everyone’s work is consistent and correct. 

You’ll have a large presence in the growth of our prepared foods kitchen, helping to guide and teach prep cooks as our offerings, space, and schedule grow. You must be able to work well with your teammates, manage their time effectively, and execute consistently, day in and day out. We value hard workers with excellent time management skills and emotional maturity when under pressure. 

Responsibilities 

Your main duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

• Kick-off the prep day at 6AM, distributing tasks from a centralized prep list, and ensuring all prep priorities are addressed.
• Facilitate our prep team, organizing their labor as they complete tasks, and ensuring they communicate their needs, progress, and handoffs to our Cook and Pack teams.
• Lead by example and execute daily production with undeniable energy. Make it look easy, day in and day out.
• Follow internal recipes, iterate on how their process can improve, and adapt quickly as recipes are updated or new items are introduced.
• Create clear daily prep lists and production plans based on volume forecasts, staffing, and equipment constraints, with a focus on efficiency and minimizing overtime.
• Order ingredients and supplies needed for daily production, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
• Train and coach prep cooks on new recipes, techniques, and standards, in partnership with the Kitchen Operations Manager.
• Ensure full compliance with DOH and internal food safety standards, including temperature logs, chemical dilution, glove use, and sanitation practices.
• Lead by example with perfect attendance, strong knife skills, organization, cleanliness, and attention to detail.
• Foster a collaborative, respectful team environment through clear communication and hands-on leadership.
• Identify, communicate, and escalate equipment issues, safety hazards, or quality concerns immediately.
• Maintain clean and organized workstations, floors, storage areas, and walk-ins throughout the shift.
• Properly label, date, and store all prepared items using FIFO protocols to minimize waste and ensure food safety.
• Demonstrate continuous improvement by actively refining techniques, learning new skills, and incorporating feedback.

About you

• 4+ years experience in a kitchen, 1+ years in a leadership role
• Fluent in Spanish and English
• Passion for operational excellence, consistency, and leadership
• Ability to lift 50+ lbs and stand for 8+ hours
• Must have great passion for cooking, vegetables, farming and hospitality
• Strong communication, organizational and problem-solving skills
• Possess a positive and collaborative attitude
• Must be a leader, capable of instructing, guiding, and correcting coworkers
• Eager to help others learn and develop
• Always ready for a challenge and ready to constantly learn and improve
