Registered Nurse Emergency Department

Job Summary:

The Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department (ED RN) provides advanced nursing care in a Level II Trauma Center with a combined Adult and Pediatric patient population. The role involves managing critical and complex cases including cardiac, neurological, orthopedic, pediatric, psychiatric, respiratory, shock, and trauma patients. The nurse is responsible for patient assessment, emergency interventions, medication administration, and collaborating with the interdisciplinary team to ensure optimal patient outcomes. A minimum of 2 years of experience in emergency nursing and required certifications are essential for this position. Responsibilities:

• Provide skilled nursing care in a 32-bed ED with a 1:4 nurse-to-patient ratio.
• Perform cardiac monitoring and emergency response including dysrhythmia interpretation and management.
• Manage IV therapy including blood product administration, central line care, phlebotomy, and IV starts.
• Administer emergency medications, continuous IV paralytics, sedation, vasopressors, and procedural sedation.
• Care for neurological cases such as CVA, ICP monitoring, neuro-trauma, spinal cord injury, and traumatic brain injury.
• Provide orthopedic trauma care.
• Manage pediatric emergencies including asthma, burns, seizures, poison ingestion, and behavioral health concerns.
• Handle psychiatric emergencies including acute psychosis, drug overdose, violent behavior, and suicidal patients.
• Provide respiratory care including chest tube management, CPAP/BiPAP, ABG interpretation, intubation, and ventilator management.
• Respond to shock and trauma cases including gunshot wounds and traumatic amputations.
• Perform triage and maintain isolation precautions.
• Utilize Cerner electronic medical records for documentation (preferred).
• Float within scope to meet facility needs as required.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Active Registered Nurse license in Illinois or eligible to apply.
• Minimum 2 years of experience in Emergency Department nursing.
• Certifications: ACLS, BLS, NIH, PALS, TNCC.
• Proficiency in cardiac monitoring, IV therapy, emergency medication administration, and critical care nursing skills.
• Strong clinical skills in neurological, orthopedic, pediatric, psychiatric, respiratory, shock, and trauma care.
• Ability to interpret dysrhythmias and manage multi-system organ dysfunction.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Cerner electronic medical record experience.
• Previous charge nurse experience.

Special Considerations:

• Work setting: Level II Trauma Center, combined Adult/Pediatric Emergency Department.
• Must be capable of managing high-acuity patients in a fast-paced environment.
• No on-call requirement.
• Floating to other units within scope may be required.
• Parking permit required but no cost for parking.
• RTO restrictions ideally no more than 5 days.
• Client may cancel shifts with limited guaranteed hours; on-call shifts count as called-off shifts.

Scheduling:

• Shift options: 4x12 hour shifts or 3x12 hour night shifts (1900-0730).
• Weekend work as needed.
• Block scheduling not accommodated.
