Description of Work

Salary Range: $39,731.00 - $48,339.00

The Veterans Treatment Court (VTC) Assistant provides essential administrative, investigative, and program support to both the District Attorney’s Office and the Veterans Treatment Court Director. This role bridges the work of the prosecutorial team, the VTC management team, and community partners to ensure smooth case processing and successful program participation for eligible veterans. The position requires excellent organizational skills, strong interpersonal abilities, and a commitment to serving justice-involved veterans with professionalism and integrity.

This position is time-limited, grant funded, full-time. Funding for this position will end on June 30, 2027.

Essential job duties, but not limited to, the following:

For the District Attorney’s Office:

• Review and analyze criminal histories of potential VTC candidates.
• Communicate with victims to confirm approval for defendant participation in VTC where required.
• Assist prosecutors in identifying eligible veteran defendants and making appropriate referrals.
• Maintain accurate case notes and reports for VTC-related matters within the DA’s office.
• Coordinate with law enforcement agencies to verify veteran status and collect relevant documentation.

For the Veterans Treatment Court Director:

• Assist in day-to-day program operations, including scheduling, data entry, and participant file maintenance.
• Support the Director in recruiting, screening, and enrolling veteran participants.
• Facilitate communication between the DA’s office, defense counsel, probation, treatment providers, and other VTC team members.
• Help prepare reports, presentations, and statistical summaries for internal and external stakeholders.
• Participate in court sessions, team meetings, and community outreach events as directed.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Knowledge of: court system and procedures; legal terminology; and community resources to refer victims and witnesses.

Skill in: Microsoft Office Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint; accurately typing 35-40 wpm; and answering a multi-line telephone system.

Ability to: interview to elicit information from victims and witnesses to assure appropriate services; coordinate and schedule the daily operations of the victim and witness program; manage the court appearances of victims and witnesses to ensure their presence in the courtroom when needed; communicate orally and in writing with persons of diverse backgrounds; establish and maintain effective working relationships with law enforcement officers, officials of related agencies and the general public; and calmly handle stressful situations.

Minimum Education and Experience

Graduation from high school, or and equivalency certificate, and two years of legal/secretarial experience.

• Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds, including veterans, victims, attorneys, and treatment providers.

• Familiarity with criminal justice procedures and victim rights.

• Organizational and time management skills with attention to detail.

• Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.

• Experience working with veterans or knowledge of military culture highly desirable.

• Associate’s degree or higher preferred.
