Job Summary Correctional nursing involves treating incarcerated patients held in facilities like jails and juvenile detention centers. Operating within the confines of various correctional facilities, correctional nurses perform many of the same tasks as nurses in traditional medical settings. They aim to provide health care by assessing, diagnosing, and treating inmates. Correctional nurses may have more independence due to smaller staff and limited supplies, which encourages strong assessment skills. Qualifications Graduate of a state-approved school of practical (vocational) nursing and currently licensed in the state(s) where practicing. Two (2) years of nursing experience preferred. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Compassionate and able to handle stress. Ability to undertake a variety of diverse care tasks and work in a multidisciplinary team. Familiarity with health, safety, and sanitation standards and procedures. Understanding of confidentiality obligations and nursing best practices. Job Duties Maintain proper safety procedures and monitor medical supplies (e.g., needles, medications). Limit use of potentially dangerous materials as appropriate. Monitor patients’ progress and responses to treatments; administer medications and maintain disease clinics; document patient medical histories. Intake Screening: screen inmates entering the facility for immediate medical and mental health needs, assist with housing placement, schedule ongoing health visits, and determine if acute care is needed first. Chronic Care Clinic: manage chronic conditions (e.g., hypertension, asthma, arthritis) and provide patient education and medication compliance review. Medication Administration: administer medications via medication pass or pill line; dosing may occur in the medical unit or housing unit. Nursing Sick Call: provide episodic health care services; use standardized protocols for over-the-counter medications; arrange follow-up with a physician or advanced practitioner as needed.
