The Cook is responsible for preparing and cooking a wide variety of food based on government policy and recipes serviced both hot or cold, food is handled and stored food in a clean and sanitary environment according to all applicable food safety laws and regulations.

The USDA Forest Service operates Job Corps Civilian Conservation Centers providing academic, vocational, and life-skills training to at-risk youth and young adults at Centers across the United States, with student populations ranging from roughly 100 to over 300 per Center.

* The start date is approximately August '26, pending contract award*

Key Responsibilities

• Controls and manages the stock levels of food and supplies, promotes standards of conduct which are expected and accepted in the workplace and participates in the BMS as necessary to ensure proper workplace appearance, professionalism, and behavior.
• Prepares and cooks items that require complex techniques and/or multiple preparation steps including specialty sauces, soups, stocks etc. from scratch without the use of packaged mixes.
• Prepare fresh fruits and vegetables for cooking.
• Maintaining proper temperatures as required by standard food safety limits and properly presenting food in an appetizing manner.
• Operating, cleaning, and maintaining standard kitchen equipment.
• Reviewing food handling and sanitation requirements and directives to ensure proper procedures are followed by kitchen staff.
• Cleaning and storing utensils, pots and pans and any other cooking tools and equipment.

Knowledge Required by the Position:

• Skills include roasting, broiling, baking, frying, boiling, steaming, stewing meats, fish, and poultry and prepping, slicing, grinding, and cutting food items.
• Knowledge of cooking foods in large quantities and adjusting recipes for quantities needed on fluctuating servings required and planning the cooking process to complete meals.

Required Qualifications

• Work may include standing, walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and crawling. May require lifting objects 20-50 lbs. and on occasion more than 50 lb
• Ability to pass a background check
• Ability to work onsite at Harpers Ferry Job Corps Civilian conservation Center site in Harpers Ferry, WV

Compensation & Benefits

• $38.40 / hourly
