Communications Technician II (Technical Services Unit)

COMMUNICATIONS TECHNICIAN II (Technical Services Unit) Salary is negotiable within the listed range based on qualifications and authorization. GENERAL DUTIES Troubleshooting, repairing, and performing preventive maintenance on electronics; programming radios and designing radio channel layouts; installing electronics in public safety vehicles, motorbikes, marine vessels, and buildings; providing service calls and customer support; certification support for ambulances; configuring and maintaining video recording systems (in‑car video, body‑cam); providing self‑development training and other related tasks. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS At least two (2) years of experience troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing electronic equipment. Ability to install, maintain, repair, modify various communications and electronic systems. Proficiency reading and interpreting technical manuals, circuit diagrams, schematics, symbols, and blueprints. Completion of training courses in electronic theory and practice, including Ohm’s Law, AC/DC theory, audio and radio frequency circuits, electronic measurements, semiconductor fundamentals, and mathematics for electronic technology. Experience using hand and power tools. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Thorough Knowledge of: Principles, techniques, methods, test equipment, and tools used in installation, maintenance, repair, modification, and fabrication of communications and other related electronic equipment and systems. General Knowledge of: Principles of electronic system design and operation. Ability to: Install, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and modify a variety of communications and electronic equipment and systems. Read and interpret instructions in technical manuals, including circuit diagrams, schematics, symbols, and blueprints. Use proper test equipment for electronics maintenance and repair. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with county and city staff, electronic contractors, vendors, and the public. Record technical information on time sheets, logs, and invoices. Education and Experience Completion of a training course in electronic theory and practice (Ohm’s Law, AC/DC theory, audio and radio frequency circuits, electronic measurements, semiconductor fundamentals, mathematics for electronic technology). Two (2) years of experience in maintenance and repair of electronic communication equipment. License/Certification Possession of a valid California Driver’s License, Class C or higher, by date of appointment. SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS Not have been convicted of a felony or be on probation; must pass an extensive background investigation to the satisfaction of the Orange County Sheriff‑Coroner.
