MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Reporting to the Nurse Director, with direction from the Registered Nurse, the position provides high quality, individualized basic patient care activities as identified by the RN, using the components of the nursing process. Position Summary: Performs duties to meet the physical, psycho-social and spiritual needs of the critically ill patient, incorporating cultural and ethnic factors and the developmental age (infant through geriatric) into assessments and care activities. Under hospital and regulatory standards of care, demonstrates implementation of basic nursing assistant aspects of the trans-disciplinary care plan; provides care based on the individualized patient care plan with the patient/family and RN direction; observes and reports patient issues; performs vital signs, oxygen administration, wound care, gait/crutch training, phlebotomy, splint application, ECG electrode placement and monitoring, and related patient care services as trained and validated by policy and competency. Effectively communicates with physicians, staff and other disciplines to implement patient care activities across the continuum. Prepares patients/families for procedures and assists the RN and MD in these processes. Responds to concerns regarding patient safety based on the environment, equipment and patient behavior. Demonstrates ability to assist in emergency situations and follows established emergency procedures. Follows organizational chain of command for notification of patient care/service issues when appropriate. Maintains knowledge of therapeutic patient care issues and assists with patient care activities for the infant through geriatric population; supports care across the health care continuum. Respects patient rights, ensuring privacy and dignity and adapting approaches to cultural and religious diversity. Reports suspected abuse, neglect, or domestic violence relative to age groups as appropriate. Reinforces patient/family educational needs identified by the RN and provides individualized teaching during care, considering age/development and population needs; monitors teaching effectiveness. Demonstrates knowledge of age-specific care, safety measures, normal values, skin integrity, behavior, motor skills and activities that place patients at risk; communicates clearly with patients and families. Applicable populations: Infant, Pediatric, Adult, Geriatric. Practices universal precautions. Other Position Accountabilities Understanding procedures for reporting and responding to facility emergencies (e.g., fire, infant abduction, utility disruptions, hazardous spills). Knowledge of equipment capabilities, limitations, and appropriate applications. Attends orientation and in-service programs; completes annual mandatory updates. Participates in the Medical Center’s continuous quality improvement process. Accesses and uses computer systems; performs clerical functions as needed. Complies with policies and procedures including timekeeping, dress code, attendance, and Code of Conduct. Maintains required certifications, education, and in-service requirements; participates in departmental staff meetings. Communicates with physicians, administrative staff, co-workers and patients/families in a respectful, caring manner. Maintains a professional image; demonstrates flexibility in patient care/service; collaborates with co-workers. Other duties as assigned. JOB QUALIFICATIONS Minimum Education High School graduate or equivalent. Completion of EMT training or equivalent. Preferred Education N/A Minimum Work Experience and Qualifications Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Preferred Work Experience and Qualifications Minimum one year recent experience in an emergency setting preferred Required Licensure, Certification, Registration or Designation Basic EKG Course Preferred. Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association (AHA) Assault Response Competency (ARC) (required within 30 days of hire) Los Angeles County Fire Card (required within 30 days of hire) Status: Full Time Shift: Nights Hours: 12hrs (6:45pm - 7:15am) Weekly/Bi-Weekly Hours: 36hrs/72hrs
