Social Media Coordinator
Book Harvest
Description Book Harvest, an award-winning children’s literacy nonprofit scaling nationally, is seeking a Social Media Coordinator to bring our mission to life across digital platforms and in-person moments — through compelling content, authentic storytelling, and a sharp visual eye. This full-time position is a key member of the External Relations team and reports to the Chief External Relations Officer. This role is responsible for managing Book Harvest’s social media presence across all platforms, producing a weekly blog, and capturing photo and video content that reflects the energy and heart of our programs and community. The ideal candidate leads with their own creativity and critical thinking, using technology as a tool rather than a shortcut. This is a hybrid position; in a typical week, approximately 40–50% of the work will take place at Book Harvest’s office at 2501 University Drive in Durham, NC and/or in the community. Typical work hours span Monday–Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends required for events and content capture opportunities. About Book Harvest Book Harvest is a nationally recognized nonprofit organization based in Durham, NC, with an ambitious mission: books for every child, support for every parent, and literacy for every community. Since 2011, Book Harvest has placed more than three million books in the hands of children and families—grounded in the belief that literacy starts at birth, in the home, powered by parents, and nourished with books. Book Harvest is now at a defining moment. The organization is embarking on a national movement to ensure that every child has the home library they need to become a reader and is building the research, policy, and field infrastructure to realize a new standard of care. With annual revenues exceeding $10 million and programmatic reach expanding nationally, this is an organization accelerating toward national impact. Who You Are You are a creative, mission-driven communicator who understands that social media is about connection, not just content. You have a genuine eye for storytelling and visual identity, and you take pride in producing work that reflects the communities Book Harvest serves. You are equally at home crafting an Instagram caption as you are photographing a family event or editing a short video for TikTok. Organized, proactive, and culturally fluent, you understand that Book Harvest has a distinct voice and brand—and you honor it while staying current with what’s relevant. You are a human-first creator who uses AI as a supporting tool, not a substitute for original thinking. What You'll Do Own our social media presence : Manage Book Harvest’s accounts across Meta (Facebook and Instagram), TikTok, LinkedIn, and YouTube — from content planning and drafting to scheduling and publishing. Stay current on platform trends, algorithm changes, and emerging formats, proactively identifying opportunities that are a genuine fit for our brand and audience — not just what’s trending. Tell our story through a weekly blog : Produce one blog post per week, either by writing original content or by soliciting and editing contributions from community members, program partners, and Book Harvest staff. Your writing will reflect the voice, values, and heart of the organization. Keep our content engine running : Maintain Book Harvest’s editorial calendar, ensuring a consistent and well-paced content rhythm across platforms and campaigns. Track all media coverage and publicity in our shared Monday.com board, keeping records current and organized. Turn data into decisions : Track and report on social media analytics, using data to inform content strategy and share insights with the External Relations team. Know what’s working, why it’s working, and how to do more of it. Capture the moments that matter : Serve as Book Harvest’s primary photographer at events, programs, and staff moments, building an organized and accessible library of high-quality image assets. Capture video content across contexts and edit — or actively develop the skills to edit — video for use on social media and YouTube. Design with intention : Design promotional graphics and visual collateral using tools such as Canva and Adobe Creative Suite, producing materials that are visually compelling, on-brand, and ready for use across digital and print channels. Collaborate with the Chief External Relations Officer on visual campaigns and brand merchandise (t-shirts, hats, bags), coordinating production with printers and vendors as needed. Bridge language and community : Ensure that key content — including social media posts, blog posts, and digital campaigns — is accurately translated as needed, coordinating with translators or bilingual team members to maintain voice and brand integrity across languages. Show up for our community : Provide on-site support at Book Harvest events with a primary focus on content capture and real-time social media coverage. Actively contribute to a collaborative, mission-driven culture through staff and departmental meetings, DEBI initiatives, and ongoing professional development. Requirements What You'll Bring Demonstrated experience managing organizational social media accounts across multiple platforms, including Meta, LinkedIn, TikTok, and YouTube. Strong visual design skills — beyond template use — with a confident understanding of color, composition, layout, and brand application; proficiency in Canva and Adobe Creative Suite preferred. Strong writing and editing skills, with experience producing content for public audiences; blogging or editorial experience preferred. Proficiency with a camera (DSLR or mirrorless preferred) and a genuine interest in documentary-style photography that captures people and moments authentically. Video capture experience required; video editing experience strongly preferred, or demonstrated willingness and aptitude to develop this skill. Familiarity with social media analytics tools and comfort interpreting and applying engagement data. Proficiency in Google Suite; experience with project management tools such as Monday.com is a plus. A human-first approach to content creation: uses AI as a supporting tool, not a substitute for original thinking, voice, or creative judgment. Who Should Apply At Book Harvest, we believe those who are affected most by literacy injustice must be centered in the work that we do—both inside and out. We prioritize applications from individuals who have lived experiences of our programs or who come from the communities we serve, and we strongly encourage applications from candidates who may not have seen themselves reflected in books and stories as a child. We welcome applications from varied professional backgrounds and do not require college degrees. However, candidates must be able to demonstrate relevant experience managing social media accounts, producing content, and working within a brand identity. Total Rewards At Book Harvest, we believe in radical transparency, deep equity, and taking exceptional care of our team. Salary Range: $44,895-$56,00. Our Equity-First Pay Model: Compensation is tied to your experience and dedication, not your negotiation skills. To eliminate systemic pay gaps, we never ask for salary history and do not negotiate offers. Instead, we use a predictable, step-based model that rewards your increasing tenure with dollars. Health & Wealth: 100% employer-sponsored healthcare (with elective dental, vision, disability, and life) and a 401(k) with an automatic 3% employer contribution (no match required). Time Off: Generous PTO, plus dedicated paid family leave and rewarding sabbatical leaves. Growth & Culture: Professional development funds, a flexible hybrid schedule, and a purposeful workplace where your work directly impacts children and literacy equity. Hiring Process Resume and cover letter required. The hiring process will include application questions, a phone call, and approximately two interviews, plus a work sample and reference checks.
