Quality Inspector Aerospace Components

The Quality Inspector measures and evaluates aerospace components to verify that they meet precise dimensional and quality specifications. This role uses a variety of inspection tools and follows documented quality procedures to support in-process, post-run, coating-return, and final inspection activities in a centralized quality department.

Responsibilities

  • Measure aerospace components to ensure full conformity to engineering specifications and quality standards.
  • Use calipers, micrometers, pin gauges, and coordinate measuring machines (CMM) to perform dimensional inspections.
  • Inspect parts ranging in size from approximately 1.5 inches to 120 inches, maintaining accuracy within tolerances from 0.2 down to 0.0001 of an inch.
  • Work within a centralized inspection area where inspection work is scheduled and assigned through a quality queue for in-process and post-run inspections.
  • Perform additional inspections on parts that are sent out for coating and returned from a sister facility to verify dimensional integrity and coating impact.
  • Manually record quality results and updates on the documentation that travels with each part through the entire production process.
  • Update the electronic quality system with inspection results and status changes and log each part to the next step in the production operation.
  • Identify and document nonconforming parts by completing nonconformance tags and sending parts to the central inspection area for further evaluation.
  • Conduct dimensional quality testing as required for both in-process and final inspection activities.
  • Examine parts and structures for defects, damage, or deviations from specifications during final inspection.
  • Move parts safely from shipping tables to inspection tables and back as needed to support the inspection and shipping process.
  • Inspect final shipment parts and assemblies to confirm that they meet all dimensional and documentation requirements before release.
  • Cross-reference engineering drawings, quality documentation, and customer orders with shipments to verify accuracy and completeness.
  • Follow quality documentation and work instructions to determine the appropriate inspection tools and methods for each part.
  • Collaborate with quality engineers and other quality inspectors on a regular basis to resolve quality issues and maintain consistent inspection practices.
  • Support varying production demands by flexing to different inspection priorities and schedules based on business needs.
  • Participate in training on the assigned initial shift and demonstrate the ability to work independently before transitioning to another shift as required.

Essential Skills

  • At least 2 years of aerospace quality inspection experience.
  • Proficiency in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and the ability to interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Hands-on experience using calipers, micrometers, pin gauges, and coordinate measuring machines (CMM) for dimensional inspection.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform dimensional quality testing on precision aerospace components.
  • Ability to work through detailed quality documentation and instructions to select appropriate inspection tools and methods.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy when measuring tight tolerances down to 0.0001 of an inch.
  • Capability to document inspection results clearly and accurately on paper and in electronic quality systems.
  • Availability to work varied schedules and shifts as needed to meet production and inspection demands.
  • Background in shipping/receiving or related S/R activities supporting final inspection and shipment of parts.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in a climate-controlled machine shop or manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with centralized inspection workflows and quality queues for assigning work.
  • Comfort working with a range of part sizes from small precision components to large structures.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with quality engineers, other quality inspectors, and documentation review staff.
  • Strong organizational skills for managing documentation that follows parts through the entire production process.
  • Adaptability to move between in-process, post-run, coating-return, and final inspection tasks based on business needs.
