Museum Specialist (Biological Anthropology)

Summary The Smithsonian Institution is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) in Washington, DC. The Museum Specialist (Biological Anthropology) role involves use, management, outreach, and physical care of biological anthropology collections in the museum. Responsibilities Perform collections management support duties, including processing and distribution of scientific items entering the Department. Prepare collection items as traditional museum study items within the anthropology departments. Provide physical access to collections for users according to departmental guidelines; may provide limited tours and outreach content. Assist with maintaining the departmental database by examining collection items from their original data sources for information that aids identification and description of the collection item. Conditions of Employment Must pass a pre‑employment background investigation. May need to complete a probationary period. Must maintain a bank account for direct deposit/electronic transfer. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and may be required to use a forklift or scissor lift. Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license. Must use personal protective equipment when working with dry or fluid‑preserved collections. Must be able to climb ladders as needed. Qualifications Basic Qualifications: Experience related to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects, including collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation. Specialized Experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS‑07 level, working with biological anthropology/human osteology, including documentation for accession and loans, providing collections access to researchers, coordinating shipments/loans, and using collection information systems and databases. Education: Master’s degree or equivalent graduate degree, or two full years of progressively higher‑level graduate education leading to such a degree. Foreign education must be accredited by a U.S. accrediting institution. Education and experience may be combined to meet the basic qualifications.
