Assistant Public Defender

Hourly pay rate will fall within stated range based on experience. Assistant Public Defender (APD) Role The Assistant Public Defender (APD) is a trial lawyer position that supports the appointed Public Defender Director, playing a crucial role in countering state prosecutions. The APD practices in various forums, including county, municipal, and township courts, offering client-centered holistic legal representation to clients unable to afford legal counsel for criminal or civil violations. Responsibilities Support the appointed Public Defender Director in countering state prosecutions. Practice in county, municipal, and township courts. Provide client-centered holistic representation to clients who cannot afford legal counsel for criminal or civil violations. May be assigned to youth/juveniles under 18 charged with criminal offenses and parents at risk of losing their children to the State due to allegations of neglect or abuse, and sometimes serve as a Guardian ad Litem (GAL) in these cases. Provide operational and administrative assistance to the Director—recruiting, training, supervising, and evaluating a large volunteer and paid workforce of student interns. Initially work under supervision but gradually gain independence; may take on administrative duties, train and supervise subordinates, lead, and handle more difficult or higher jeopardy cases. Physical and Environmental Requirements General sedentary work with occasional lifting of objects up to thirty-five (35) pounds. Work in various locations—County Courthouse, Jail, Public Defenders Office— and additional travel may be required. Preferred Qualifications Bilingual in Spanish highly desired. Two years of experience in criminal or family law (neglect and abuse, juvenile, probate (mental health)). Eligibility and Additional Requirements Must possess a Law Degree from an accredited college or university. Have a valid Michigan driver's license. Must be eligible for Membership in the State Bar Association and be licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan. Must be able to secure clearance to enter correctional facilities. Must provide personal transportation for job‑related duties throughout the County if a County‑owned vehicle is not available. Candidate must pass a post‑offer medical examination (including back screen and complete physical) and drug screening test administered by a County‑appointed physician before the first day of employment. Candidate may be required to pass a post‑offer criminal background check; employment is contingent upon the results. Must satisfactorily complete a probationary period before the appointment is considered permanent.
