8W Peds ICU offers countless opportunities to gain expertise in pulmonary through a supportive environment with a highly engaged staff. A Registered Nurse on this unit has the opportunity to truly get to know their patients and families and be involved in the continuum of care as we treat many chronic conditions.

8 West is a 24-bed pulmonary unit that cares for patients diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, bronchiolitis, asthma, pneumonia, obstructive sleep apnea, and respiratory distress. Patients vary in acuity from acute to progressive care. The pulmonary multidisciplinary team consists of a fantastic group of nurses, physicians, case managers, social workers, patient care assistants, unit secretaries, and respiratory therapists. You will engage in a high level of collaboration with many of these disciplines on a regular basis to provide excellent care for our patients.

Nursing skills gained on this unit include assessment skills, central line use and care, feeding tube use and care, tracheostomy care, interdisciplinary collaboration, time management and prioritization, and patient education.

Unit successes and designations include many nurses with CPN certification, Daisy and Red Shoe award nominees, capstone preceptors, and involvement in unit and hospital committees.

Qualifications require an Associates of Nursing (ASN); Bachelor of Nursing (BSN) preferred. Requires current state of Indiana license as Registered Nurse. Registered Nurse (RN) must have graduated from a nationally accredited nursing program. Exceptions: Candidates who have not graduated from a nationally accredited program may be considered if they possess more than two years of acute care experience. Such exceptions are subject to review and approval by the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO). Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA. Other Advanced Life Support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
