Paint & Body Technician

The Paint & Body Technician is a highly skilled, multi-functional fleet professional responsible for performing advanced collision repair, refinishing, and light-to-moderate mechanical repairs on Atlanta Public Schools' fleet of vehicles, including school buses, white fleet units, and specialty equipment. Aligned with APS fleet operational standards, this role extends beyond traditional body repair by integrating mechanical and diagnostic capabilities to support overall fleet readiness. The position plays a critical role in reducing Out-of-Service (OOS) time, ensuring vehicles are returned to service in safe, compliant, and fully operational condition, and supporting fleet-wide operational efficiency across multiple locations.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Education: High school diploma or GED required, Technical School Diploma
• Certifications/Licenses: Valid Driver's License required, CDL preferred or ability to obtain
• Experience: 2 years of experience in automotive body repair, painting, or related field, Experience working with heavy-duty vehicles, school buses, or fleet equipment preferred, Experience in K12 education or public sector preferred

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

• Performs structural and non-structural collision repairs on buses and fleet vehicles in alignment with OEM and industry standards
• Assesses vehicle damage and develops appropriate repair strategies
• Repairs or replaces panels, frames, doors, bumpers, mirrors, and structural components
• Completes required welding, fabrication, and alignment work
• Executes full paint and refinishing processes, including surface preparation, priming, sealing, painting, and finishing
• Mixes and applies coatings to meet APS fleet standards with accurate color matching, blending, and detailing
• Ensures compliance with all environmental and safety regulations related to paint and materials
• Diagnoses and repairs mechanical issues related to collision damage, including electrical systems, wiring, lighting, and safety components
• Performs minor to moderate repairs, including brake replacement, suspension work, and electrical troubleshooting
• Escalates complex issues to Master Technicians and supports fleet operations during high-demand periods
• Required to have prompt, regular attendance in person and be available to work on-site during regular business hours and as needed
• Performs other duties as assigned by the appropriate administrator or their representative

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Advanced knowledge of collision repair, structural repair, and refinishing techniques
• Working knowledge of automotive systems, including electrical, lighting, suspension, and basic brake systems
• Ability to diagnose mechanical issues associated with body damage
• Knowledge of OSHA, environmental, and hazardous material handling standards
• Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and repair procedures
• Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
• Skilled in use of fleet management systems (AssetWorks/FleetFocus preferred)
• High attention to detail with a focus on quality, safety, and compliance
• Ability to manage workload in a fast-paced, multi-location fleet environment
• Effective communication and teamwork skills

• Upper Body Mobility: Ability to use hands to grasp, and manipulate small objects; manipulate fingers, twist and bend at wrist and elbow; extend arms to reach outward and upward; use hands and arms to lift objects; turn, raise, and lower head
• Strength: Ability to lift, push, pull and/or carry objects which weigh as much as 5 or more pounds on a frequent basis. Incumbent may be required to physically restrain parties involved in a conflict
