VACANCY
Join a progressive law enforcement family! The Pomona Police Department is recruiting current peace officers with a law enforcement agency or recent academy graduates. Following an orientation and five-phase training program, officers will perform general police duties and other responsibilities as assigned. The Pomona Police Department offers a challenging career for individuals dedicated to serving and protecting the community.
Pomona is the 5th largest city in Los Angeles County. Throughout their career, a police officer may have the opportunity to work patrol, investigations, traffic, multi agency task forces, canine, aviation, and a variety of other teams/assignments. Pomona has its own Type 1 jail facility (staffed by non-sworn jailers) and its own firing range. Due to recent and anticipated retirements, the department has several vacancies, making this an excellent time to lateral over to the Pomona PD family.

THE DEPARTMENT
The Pomona Police Department has a complement of 169 sworn personnel positions and 112 professional (non-sworn) positions, operating out of a centrally located facility adjacent to the Pomona Civic Center. The Department offers the community comprehensive and progressive police protection. Pomona Police Officers perform a variety of duties in the enforcement of laws and the prevention of crimes; control traffic flow and enforce State and local traffic regulations; and perform a variety of technical and administrative tasks in support of the Department.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS TO APPLY

Graduation from high school of GED equivalency.
Must possess a valid California Class "C" driver's license.

OUT OF STATE LATERAL APPLICANTS
Must possess a valid state license of place of residency. Applicant must obtain California Class C driver's license after meeting residency requirements. Out of State waiver issued by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training must be submitted with application. Must be currently employed and in good standing with a law enforcement agency of the United States. Knowledge of: Police methods and procedures including patrol, crime prevention, traffic control, investigation and identification techniques. Criminal law and criminal procedure with particular reference to the apprehension, arrest and custody of persons committing misdemeanors and felonies, including rules of evidence pertaining to the seizure and preservation of evidence. Offensive and defensive weapons nomenclature and theory. First aid principles, practices and techniques. Self defense tactics. Interviewing and interrogation techniques. Customer service needs and delivery. Safe driving principles and practices. Skill to: Operate modern office equipment including computer equipment and software. Operate a motor vehicle safely. Ability to : Observe accurately and remember names, faces, numbers, incidents and places. Use, maintain proficiency and properly care for firearms and other defensive weapons, including but not limited to side-arms, patrol rifle, shotgun, and less lethal weapons. Understand, interpret and apply laws, regulations, policies and procedures. Prepare clear, accurate and grammatically correct written reports. Analyze situations quickly and objectively to determine and take emergency action. Identify potential crime situations or traffic hazards and take preventive action. Meet the first aid requirement as prescribed by the State of California and to administer first aid. Learn the operation of standard equipment and facilities required in the performance of assigned tasks. Meet the physical requirements established by the Department. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. ESSENTIAL DUTIES
SELECTION PROCESS
EXAMINATION PROCEDURE
The examination process may consist of an oral interview weighing 100% of your overall score. Prior to employment, applicants must successfully pass a background interview with the Police Chief or his designated representative, a polygraph, and an in-depth background investigation. Conditional job offers are contingent upon successful completion of a psychological evaluation and a pre-employment medical exam which includes an alcohol/drug screen exam. Failure to receive a recommendation for hire at any phase of these procedures will result in disqualification.

Sworn employees serve a 12-month probationary period. The Salary Scale Plan is composed of five steps. Merit step increases are based on meets standards performance. WORK SCHEDULE: Employees work a 4/10 work schedule. RETIREMENT BENEFITS : Provided by the California Public Employee's Retirement System. Every regular employee becomes a member immediately upon employment. New employees who become a "new" member of CalPERS for the first time on or after January 1, 2013 will be enrolled in the CalPERS 2.7% @ 57, FAS 3 Plan. Under the current MOU, the member's contribution is 9%. Effective July 1, 2014, new members hired on or after January 1, 2013 will be required to pay at least 50% of the normal cost, currently 14.00% (Govt. Code Section. 7522030(c)). However, a new employee who is a "classic" member of CalPERS or a current member of another California public retirement system will be enrolled in the CalPERS 3% @ 55, FAS 1 Plan. "Classic" members shall pay 9% of the CalPERS member's retirement contribution. City of Pomona employees do not contribute into Social Security.
LONGEVITY PAY: All employees hired after January 1, 2002, who complete 20 years of service as a Pomona sworn peace officer, which may include all previous peace officer experience (excluding military law enforcement service), shall receive 10% of their base salary. Employees who complete 15 years of service as a sworn Pomona peace officer shall receive 5% of their base salary and employees who complete 10 years as a sworn Pomona peace officer shall receive 2.5% of their base salary. UNIFORM ALLOWANCE: $40.00 per pay period. PAID HOLIDAYS: 13 paid holidays per year. VACATION LEAVE: Lateral employees hired with three (3) consecutive calendar years of prior service as a peace officer shall accrue 120 hours per year (prorated if on any leave without pay).
DEFERRED COMPENSATION: A voluntary deferred compensation 457 plan is available. Automatic Contribution. The City will enroll any new employee hired into the unit on or after January 1, 2015 unless the employee opts out of the plan in writing. a. The City will withhold $25 from the employee's wages each pay period to contribute to the plan as the default amount. b. The employee may elect to contribute an amount different from the $25 per pay period default amount (including opting out completely). c. The employee will be required to provide information and complete any forms required by the Plan. Failure to complete the form will result in automatic enrollment in the default plan chosen by the Plan Administrator.
FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNTS are available where employees use pre-tax salary to pay for regular child care, adult dependent care and/or medical expenses.

- Patrol a designated area of the City to preserve law and order, discover and prevent the commission of crimes, and enforce traffic and other laws and ordinances.
- Check buildings for physical security.
- Respond to general public service calls and complaints including domestic and public disturbances, automobile accidents, robberies, and related misdemeanor and felony incidents.
- Collect, process, photograph and present evidence, including but not limited to fingerprints, blood and related physical evidence.
- Enforce traffic laws and ordinances; check speed with radar; issue warnings and citations.
- Direct traffic at fires, special events, and other emergency or congested situations.
- Conduct traffic accident analyses; conduct investigations of serious injury and fatal traffic accidents.
- Contact and cooperate with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the apprehension of offenders and the investigation of offenses.
- Maintain contact with citizens regarding potential law enforcement problems and preserve good relationships with the general public.
- Take an active role in areas of public education relative to crime and crime prevention.
- Prepare reports on arrests made, activities performed and unusual incidents observed.
- Maintain custody of prisoners; transfer prisoners to jail. Investigate crimes; gather and preserve evidence; interview victims, complainants and witnesses; identify and interrogate suspects; apprehend and arrest offenders.
- Testify and present evidence in court.
- May serve as Field Training Officer as assigned; train new officers on departmental policies, procedures and activities.

- May serve as Intelligence Officer; gather crime related intelligence information and conduct background investigations; coordinate information and activities with outside agencies and jurisdictions.
- May conduct personnel recruitment background investigations; interview potential job candidates and references.
- May serve as K-9 Officer, member of the Department S.W.A.T Team, or member of the Drug Task Force.

- VISION: Voluntary participation by the employee
- 125 BENEFIT PLAN CONTRIBUTIONS: City paid contributions that goes towards medical, dental, and vision insurance premiums. They are applied in addition to the other contributions listed above.
- Waiving coverage = $45 per month
- Single coverage = $205 per month
- Two-party coverage = $1,075 per month
- Family coverage = $1,775 per month
- LIFE INSURANCE: $200,000 policy
- 3% base pay plus $100/mo for an Associate's degree and/or Intermediate POST Certificate.
- 6% base pay plus $200/mo for a Bachelor's degree and/or Advanced POST Certificate.
